Early identification and support is a superpower! 💪 If you’ve been wondering why your baby prefers one side or has a flat spot, you aren't alone—and it’s definitely not your fault.
Understanding the "why" behind these common patterns is the first step toward symmetrical, happy movement. Check out our latest post to see how small changes at home can make a massive difference.
Ignoring certain behaviors (when safe) helps teach kids what does get attention. Focus on reinforcing communication and positive behaviors instead✨
Ignoring behavior is not ignoring your child. It is teaching them a better way to connect💜

Is your little one always on their tiptoes? 🩰
Toe walking is a common phase for toddlers finding their feet, but when it continues past ages 2 or 3, it’s often more than just a "habit." As these slides show, toe walking is usually multifactorial—meaning there are several different systems at play!
While these slides give you a quick look at the "why," there is so much more to the story. We’ve put together a comprehensive guide on our blog that breaks down these causes in detail, explains what a PT assessment looks like, and offers actionable advice for parents.
Understanding the root cause is the first step toward the right support. Swipe through for the highlights, then head to the blog to get the full picture! ➡️

AAC is a powerful way to connect, play, and learn✨
During play, children learn best when communication feels natural and pressure-free. Modeling AAC, following your child’s lead, and responding to all communication attempts help build confidence and understanding.
Play creates meaningful opportunities for communication across all domains. Every look, gesture, sound, or button press is a step toward connection💜

Is your toddler’s footwear helping or hurting their development? 👣
Choosing the "cutest" pair is easy, but as Pediatric Physical Therapists, we look for function over fashion. A child’s foot is still developing its bones and arches, so the right shoe should act as a supportive (but flexible!) extension of their foot.
Swipe through for our Top 5 Pediatric PT-approved tips for shoe shopping:
1️⃣ Flexible Soles: They should bend where the foot bends (at the toes!).
2️⃣ Wide Toe Box: No squished toes! Space to spread = better balance.
3️⃣ Lightweight: Heavy shoes can lead to tripping and fatigue.
4️⃣ Supportive Heel Cup: Keeps the foot centered without being rigid.
5️⃣ Secure Fastening: Velcro and elastic help with "I did it myself!" independence.
Save this post for your next trip to the shoe store! 👟✨

At Speech Language Associates we specialize in Speech Language, Deaf/Hard of Hearing services (D/HH) and AAC support services. We are passionate about finding ways to unlock the power of communication for every individual by treating any disorder that impedes the normal process of human communication from verbal to the written language.
Our speech language pathologists are licensed professionals who work with individuals to address delays/disorders of speech, language, communication and swallowing.
We are specialists in treating the following disorders
• Articulation/Phonological Disorders (impaired production of speech sounds)
• Receptive and Expressive Language Delays
• Language Processing/Language Based Learning Disabilities
• Apraxia (impaired ability to sequence muscle movements to produce speech)
• Aphasia (impaired ability to understand or express speech caused by brain damage)
• Dysarthria (impaired articulation skills caused by brain damage)
• Auditory Learning/Habilitation
• Auditory Comprehension
• Development of Sign and Spoken Language in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children
• Development/Improvement of Written English Skills
We work with a wide spectrum of individuals from autistic children, to adults who have suffered a stroke, to children with a learning or speech disorder.
We approach every communication challenge by designing a resolution tailored for each specific individual and their families. We believe everyone can communicate, it’s a matter of time, finding the right tools, the right teacher, and developing the right environments. We don’t give up. We are open to alternate methods and solutions. Our goal is that every client reaches their full potential of being a confident and courageous communicator.
OUR SPECIALTIES
We have a team of Speech Language Pathologists certified in the Hanen Method, LAMP and AAC as well as advanced training in American Sign Language (ASL) .
• The Hanen Method is a supportive approach focused on working with parents and care givers to give them the skills that empower them to foster the early language and social communication development of young children.
• The LAMP Method or Language Acquisition through Motor Planning is a therapeutic approach based on neurological and motor learning principles. The goal is to give individuals who are nonverbal or have limited verbal abilities a method of independently and spontaneously expressing themselves in any setting. While this approach was initially developed to give nonverbal individuals with autism a means of communication, it can be adapted to benefit individuals with a variety of disabilities.
• AAC or Augmentative and alternative communication encompasses a method of communication using speech generating devices and apps to supplement or replace speech or writing for those with impairments in the production or comprehension of spoken or written language. This goes hand in hand with the LAMP Method
• ASL or American Sign Language has been found to be not only beneficial for the hard of hearing/deaf individual but is often times beneficial for an individual with special needs. Special needs children are very unique and they have their own pace in understanding and responding. Many special needs individuals are visual learners. Using ASL in addition to speech therapy enhances their ability to get the meaning or sense of a word.
