Wishing a big Congratulations to our newest Certified Firefighter Derrick Yoder, who passed the final portion of his Firefighter 1 tests Saturday at the MS State Fire Academy!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Firefighter 1, if you aren't familiar, is integral training for firefighters. The firefighters that go through the program have to learn multitudes of information about fire, hazardous materials, rescue techniques, fire suppression/extinguishing techniques, the proper equipment to use in each emergency and so much more!

Plus, demonstrating all these skills in many different test scenarios alongside other departments from around the state and notably being able to put on their turnouts completely and correctly in just a few minutes.

Safe to say it's not easy, but it is very important. We are so proud of Derrick and all the other firefighters who have worked tirelessly to be the best firefighters they can be and in the process be better for their communities. πŸ§‘β€πŸš’πŸ’ͺπŸ”₯

Special shout-out during this National Public Safety Telecommunications Week to our dear friends over at dispatch!
Especially ours here in Covington County πŸ‘©β€πŸš’β€

Without them answering the calls, gathering every piece of vital information and relaying it back to us so quickly and efficiently we would literally be lost.

This week and every week, THANK YOU ALL!

🚩 URGENT: HEIGHTENED WILDFIRE RISK THIS WEEKEND

Mississippi, please stay alert! A combination of low humidity and high winds is predicted to create critical wildfire conditions across the state this weekend. Our current environment is particularly vulnerable due to:

πŸ”₯ Ongoing Dry Conditions: Soil moisture is low, making vegetation easy to ignite.
πŸ”₯Increased Fuel Loads: Debris and "dry fuel" from recent natural disasters (including the February winter storms) have created extra fodder for rapid fire spread.
πŸ”₯High Wind Gusts: Winds can carry embers up to half a mile, starting new "spot fires" far from the original source.

🚫 CURRENT BURN BANS
The following counties are under strictly enforced burn bans. No outdoor burning of any kind is permitted:
Alcorn, Hinds, Benton, Rankin, Marshall, & Tishomingo

Check regularly for updated burn bans here: https://bit.ly/2MZLIC0

We at Smith County Emergency Management are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our brothers from the Sylvarena Fire Department. The fire service is more than a job β€” it's a family and a brotherhood β€” and today we mourn alongside you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his fellow firefighters, and the entire Sylvarena Fire Department during this incredibly difficult time. His dedication to serving his community and standing beside his brothers in the fire service will never be forgotten.

From all of us at Smith County Emergency Management, please know we stand with you and grieve with you. Rest easy, brother. Your watch here is done - we'll take it from here. πŸš’πŸ–€πŸ™

On this International Women's Day we're highlighting all of the brilliant and courageous women within our fire family.

Together they have many years of service and experience under their belts and also make up a large portion of our leadership and medical team. We appreciate you and all you do for MOFD!

We would also like to shout-out all the life partners, mothers, daughters, sisters, and other supporting ladies who are there for our fellas when the tones drop.
