2026 has been unforgiving to put it kindly … but there will always be the bright spots that get you out of bed to face the challenges of a new day. Today I received pictures from three producers (all of them we call friends) of new born Lever Action calves … it made our day. Thanks to all the breeders for trusting and believing in the “B”rand! More calves on the way!!

It’s that time of year again. Just wanted to reemphasize the importance of insemination timing on the success of first service conception rates. Heat detection is the greatest contributor to proper timing and observing behavior is critical. Cattle will typically go through a “pre heat” behavior when they are seeking out other cows, aggressive, chin lifting and attempting to mount. This is NOT standing heat and insemination timing should NOT be determined off of this exclusively. These “pre heat” cows should eventually settle into a “standing heat” when the aggressive behavior scales back and they are primarily interested in being mounted and STANDING STILL when mounted by another (same behavior as if a bull was servicing them). Insemination timing is determined once this standing behavior is confirmed for the first time. Secondary signs include clear mucous discharge (just be aware that this is often visible as much as 24 hours before standing heat starts), swollen v***a and/or color changes to estrus detection tail stickers. The secondary signs are also NOT a reliable indicator for determining insemination times. We recommend to customers that are new to AI and just learning how to heat detect not to use tail head stickers until you are a little more experienced at heat detection (this only comes from watching them). The stickers too often become the only point of reference for a lot of people and they are only a tool or aid. Customers that have been doing this for a long time will verify that you get out of this what you put into it! 👍

Two Lever Action sons at 30 days old … the ones we are calving at home have been consistently 60 to 65 lbs at birth … Big tops, square hips and a wide chest spread … we believe he will be a feet and leg improver with added marbling and milk. He was used on a small scale in some commercial herds and those calves are coming unassisted and with vigor too. We have some semen inventoried and can deliver to Beef Expo on Saturday if interested in using him this Spring.
