TLR reflex that OTs address:
impacts posture, muscle tone, balance, and head control. When retained, you may see:
• Poor posture (slouching or stiff extension)
• Difficulty with balance
• Toe walking
• Motion sensitivity
• Challenges with spatial awareness

✨Activities That Challenge TLR in Flexion (Head Forward Position)

These help integrate excessive flexion tone.
• Prone extension (“Superman”) holds
• Prone over a therapy ball reaching for objects
• Scooter board in prone pulling with arms
• Wheelbarrow walking
• Cobra pose / press-ups
• Bear walks
• Climbing ladders or rock walls
• Tall kneeling ball toss

👉 These promote extension against gravity.

✨Activities That Challenge TLR in Extension (Head Back Position)

These help reduce excessive extension tone.
• Forward rolls
• Log rolls
• Child’s pose
• Supine flexion hold (“tucked ball” position)
• Sit-ups or crunches
• Seated forward bending to pick up items
• Deep squat play
• Crawling through tunnels

👉 These encourage flexion control and midline stability

Focus doesn’t always happen at a desk. Value the importance of alternate seating and postural changes.
Add in a tool-based task like this and we’re targeting:
✔️ Core stability
✔️ Shoulder strength
✔️ Bilateral coordination
✔️ Visual motor skills
✔️ Sustained attention

Movement isn’t extra. It’s foundational 👏

🧠 Executive Functioning & OT — Supporting Our Older Youth

When we think of occupational therapy, many picture handwriting or sensory play. But for our older youth, executive functioning becomes the real game changer.

Executive functioning skills are the brain’s “management system.”
They impact:

✔️ Planning & prioritizing
✔️ Time management
✔️ Organization
✔️ Task initiation
✔️ Emotional regulation
✔️ Flexible thinking

If a teen struggles to start homework, forgets assignments, melts down when plans change, or feels overwhelmed by multi-step tasks — that’s not laziness. That’s a skills gap.

At Restored Hope Therapy, we address executive functioning in real, practical ways:

✨ Breaking down long-term assignments into manageable steps
✨ Teaching visual planning systems & digital tools
✨ Practicing time estimation and scheduling
✨ Building regulation strategies for stress & frustration
✨ Strengthening working memory through functional tasks
✨ Supporting independence with routines at home and school

Our goal isn’t just better grades — it’s confident, capable young adults who understand how their brain works and know how to support it.

Executive functioning skills can be taught. And with the right strategies, growth happens.
