The number one complaint patients have about their doctors is that they don’t listen to them.

I take pride in the fact that so many of my reviews and personal notes express that patients feel heard by me. What’s deeper than that and a gift of the type of practice I run (personalized care, not high volume) is that I get to really know my patients. I learn their stressors, their chapter in life, how they’re coping overall and what goals they have in and out of my office. To me, this is holistic healthcare : seeing the WHOLE person in front of me and figuring out how we can work together to maximize their health.

If you’re still trying to reset from the holidays but the thought of an icy smoothie gives you chills (and let’s be real, that makes sense in the dead of winter), you’re in luck! I’ve been making this salad about as frequently as my Greek summer staple and it checks all the boxes. My favorite way to serve it is with the squash still warm (makes the goat cheese melty) and a just grilled steak on top. But, the kale will hold up dressed into the next day or two and longer if you keep the dressing separate. You can sub in spinach in lieu of kale but fair warning it’s not nearly as sturdy.

Ingredients

Salad
5 cups (1 1/2 lbs) cubed butternut squash, cut into 3/4 inch pieces
1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup chopped pecans, toasted
10 oz lacinato kale
1 1/4 cups pomegranate arils
4 oz goat cheese or feta, crumbled

Dressing
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
3 Tbsp minced shallot
2 1/2 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp dijon mustard
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

For the butternut squash: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place squash in a mound on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, season with salt and pepper to taste and toss to evenly coat in oil. Spread into an even layer.

Bake in preheated oven 15 minutes then remove from oven and toss. Return to oven and bake until tender, about 10 minutes longer. Allow to cool several minutes before adding to salad.

For the Salad: In a large salad bowl toss together spinach, squash, 1/2 of the pecans and 1/2 of the pomegranate arils.

Drizzle with desired amount of dressing and gently toss. Sprinkle with remaining pecans, pomegranate arils and goat cheese and serve immediately.

For the dressing: Combine all dressing ingredients in a blender and season with salt and pepper to taste (about 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper). Process until well emulsified.

Enjoy and let me know if you tried it out!

Real talk: New Year’s resolutions kind of annoy me. If you’re the type of person that sets goals & metrics, you’re doing it all year long and January 1 is no different. And if that works for you, keep doing it! 🙌

But this notion that we’re going to come off the most indulgent time of year full of sugar, travel, booze, sleeping in and general disregard of routine and emerge days later (in the dead of winter I might add) a phoenix of lofty goals and unparalleled discipline is a pretty good way to set ourselves up for failure. And the stats agree:

The reality?
• 38.5% of adults make New Year’s resolutions
• 23% abandon them within 7 days
• 43% give up before February ends
• Only 9% actually succeed by December

The good news is lasting change is always possible, but it doesn’t happen with the fall of the new years ball.
Where should you start?

1. Understand how you got here
What do you want to change and why? If you don’t know how you arrived at where you are, how will you find your way out? What’s driving your current choices - convenience? Outdated conditioning? Simply routine? Identify the patterns and behaviors you wish to change, then look at your triggers.

2. Focus on habits, not willpower
No one says this better than in Atomic Habits. The gist: willpower fades quickly, habits are enduring. Lasting change comes from daily practices, not goals you white-knuckle through.

3.Build in accountability
Change doesn’t (often) happen alone. Most people need at least one other person who would notice if you quietly drop out. Even better if that person or group is pursuing similar goals, who understands that setbacks are part of growth, not total surrender.

As you think about what you want to change this year, start here: Don’t just ask what you want to change.
Ask how you got here. That’s your real starting point.

AND, if you are not the picture of motivation at the moment, that’s ok. Seasonally we should be slower, resting more and if anything, doing deep introspection before the real renewal and growth of spring
