At first glance, this gemstone looks like a slice of candy: pink in the middle and green around the edges. That vivid color banding gives away what it is: watermelon tourmaline, a variety of elbaite from the tourmaline family. 🍉

It forms deep underground in granite pegmatites, where mineral-rich fluids cool slowly and change chemistry as crystals grow. Those shifting elements create the layers of pink, white, and green that earned it its fruity nickname.

Temperature and chemistry change layer by layer, tinting the crystal from core to edge.

Brazil’s Minas Gerais region produces some of the most famous examples, but fine pieces also come from Maine, California, and Madagascar. 💎
