Kevin Shearer, DDS

Kevin Shearer, DDS Mercury-free, minimally-invasive dentistry in Mt. Shasta, California.

Dr. Shearer’s practice philosophy is that of Biomimetic Dentistry - an emerging paradigm shift that combines sound biologic principles to restore the biomechanics, structure and esthetic integrity of teeth. Highly respected individuals such as Raymond Bertolotti, one of the pioneering fathers of adhesion dentistry, Pascal Magne, Urs Belser, Didier Dietschi, and others and have refined adhesive techniques over the past 25 years. Advances in dental materials and technology, as well as an overriding respect for the preservation of natural tooth structure, have helped push biomimetic research to where it is today. The use of amalgam (“mercury” or “silver”) restorations is by nature more invasive and damaging to teeth, and not esthetically pleasing. It is also known that a majority of teeth with amalgam restorations crack over time due to the tremendous masticatory forces during chewing, and inherent lack of the restoration’s adhesion to tooth structure. The lack of bonding to the tooth causes various points of the tooth to flex independently, leading to cracks and sometimes partial or complete loss of tooth and root structure. More importantly, the presence of residual mercury in amalgam restorations is a cause for concern for patients, some of whom are sensitive to heavy metals, and the debate over the health and safety of mercury continues. We do not use any amalgam or mercury-containing materials, and we also offer fluoride-free options upon request. Dr. Shearer is a member of the Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry (ABD), International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT), International Academy of Ozone in Healthcare and Dentistry (IAOHD), American Academy of Ozonotherapy (AAO), and Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).

It's come to my attention that since we switched phone providers at the office that some calls are not getting through, with some patients walking in saying it sounds like the line goes dead or hangs up. So if you give our office a call and don't 1) reach our voicemail, or 2) reach a live person, send us a message or email and let us know what happened, and the time and phone number you called from. The phone company is working on figuring it out, but since our outgoing calls are fine, and we get some incoming phone calls (but we obviously don't get the calls that are disconnected) we have no idea of when and from what number so we can troubleshoot it. Thanks.

We're looking for a dental hygienist, either full or part-time. If you are interested in working in a great environment with wonderful patients, and are able to negotiate the insane housing prices inflated by cash-happy tourists in the area, please swing by the office and introduce yourself!

We're looking for a full-time hygienist. If you are looking for work in a fun, relaxed atmosphere, give us a ring.

For those of you who have asked to be informed when the next health classes are, I have attached a flier that I just received. It starts Monday evening at 6 p.m., September 11 at the Mt. Shasta SDA church off Highway 89. The meetings will include cooking demonstrations as well as a discussion period, so if you have any interest in healthful living, this would be a good place to start. Contact/registration information is on the flier, and although registration isn't required ahead of time, it does help them gauge how many people to provide materials and food for.

A message to everyone out there - go see your dentist regularly (even if it isn't us); just go see a doc you feel comfortable with and stay up to date with your oral health care. We often see folks who haven't seen a dentist for 5 or 10 years (or longer), and it can make things more challenging for them.

So just a friendly reminder; go see your dentist, and try to have small problems fixed before they have the potential to become larger, more expensive issues.

What post isn't complete without a picture? This patient came in this week with a diastema that she wanted filled. We didn't use any anesthetic as we didn't drill on the tooth, and she walked out with a smile she felt comfortable with.

Case of the Week - This was a fun one. The patient lost the tooth in an accident, and after letting the area heal, we decided to do a composite bridge until finances could support a better restoration. No anesthetic was used, as we only needed to make small notches for support in the teeth adjacent to the void. We spent a little time shaping and building up the replacement tooth, and then we gave it the final contour and polish. One of the more interesting cases we've done recently, and the patient was thrilled with the results.

Case of the Week (Month) - So much for a weekly post. Something simple here; the patient had an enamel crack that had some pretty dark stain on one of her front teeth that she wanted removed. We removed as little of the enamel as possible to get to the stain, then placed a composite restoration over the crack and smoothed out the edge at the patient's request. It was a fairly simple procedure, no anesthetic, and looks great.

Case of the Week - This patient came in with some decay along the gum line of his four front teeth. He had braces some years back, and has demineralized areas around the brackets that made it difficult to match, but we were able to fix it with a handful of composite shades and tints. Again, I should have stopped the slight bleeding along the gum line prior to final photo, but it looks great. If good oral hygiene is maintained, these restorations will be long-lasting. Stay tuned, and hopefully next week we'll have another unique example to post up.

Well it's definitely been a while, so I figured I'll post up the challenge of the day... take a broken tooth that could use a crown, clean it up, and work it over with composite. The outer cusp fractured off due to cracks caused by an old amalgam filling (hence the dark mercury/silver stain present). A blend of seven shades and a little over an hour later this is the result. It was more time consuming and more difficult than a crown by a long shot, but it turned out great. The only thing better would have been to keep the irritated gum tissue from lightly oozing while taking the final photo.

To borrow a quote from the best tv show in the 'verse ( ): "We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."

There are all sorts of iPhone/iPad apps out there to help with brushing your teeth. MyTeeth, available on the iOS App Store, is one of the simplest yet most informative apps I've come across. If you are having a hard time with your little ones learning how to brush their teeth, you might want to give MyTeeth a try. Even if they brush their teeth, it's always best to follow behind, as they will tend to favor certain areas and miss others. Brush away!
