Mid-America Hearing Center is the pioneer of the custom, same-day, full shell hearing aid. It was founded in 1988 in Mt. Vernon, Missouri at Mid-America Dental & Hearing Center. Mid-America Hearing Centers follow the same tradition of quality health care, reasonable prices, same-day-service and Ozark hospitality first established, in 1979, by Drs. George and Frederick C. Lauer as the Mid-America Denture Clinic. The Dental Center now shares that facility with Mid-America Hearing Center and is called Mid-America Dental & Hearing Center. The Dr. Harold & Betty George family is still actively involved in the company. Their son, Scott George, is a Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist; and serves as President & Chief Executive Officer for all non-professional services. Their grandson, Brian George, serves as Chief Operating Officer. Their granddaughter; Dr. Cheryl Williams, Mt. Vernon Clinic, also serves on the board. A visit to Mid-America is a long-standing tradition for some families. There is free RV parking in the Mt. Vernon campground where patients stay while getting services at Mid-America Dental & Hearing Center. The well maintained, park-like setting has drawn many patients to visit Mt. Vernon for an extended period of time.

Are you noticing more problems with your hearing? As with any health issue, it’s best to address hearing loss early. Here are some common signs that you might have hearing loss.

1. You have trouble hearing on the telephone...

Both cell phones and landlines have volume controls, so you might not notice trouble hearing your friend, coworker, or client if you’ve turned the volume all the way up. If you keep raising the volume higher and higher, it could be a sign of hearing loss.

2. Trouble following a conversation when people are talking at the same time...

It’s normal to get a bit lost in conversation sometimes, especially as we get older. But if you often struggle to keep up when several people are talking at once, whether at work or with family, it could be a sign of hearing loss.

3. The family (or your neighbor!) complains that your TV is too loud...

TV shows can be hard to follow, especially when background music covers up the dialogue. Turning up the volume doesn’t always make things clearer. If you often need the TV so loud that it bothers others or your neighbors can hear it, it’s a good idea to get your hearing checked.

4. You’re tired from straining to hear conversations...

Straining to hear and follow conversations can be tiring, both mentally and physically. If talking with coworkers, friends, or family leaves you feeling worn out or gives you a headache, you might have hearing loss.

5. You have trouble hearing in noisy environments...

When you’re out at a busy restaurant, background noise can make it hard to hear people at your table. Many people with hearing loss have trouble tuning out background sounds and focusing on speech. If this happens to you often, it may be time for a hearing test.

6. You say “What?” a lot...

Missing what a mumbling coworker says from across the room doesn’t always mean you have hearing loss. But if you find yourself saying “what?” all the time, you might not be hearing speech clearly. Relying on your spouse to repeat things for you is another sign you could have hearing loss.

7. People don’t seem to speak clearly...

If people around you sound muffled, like the teacher from Charlie Brown, you might have hearing loss. Often, people who can’t hear high frequencies feel like they can hear sounds but can’t understand what’s being said.

8. You misunderstand what people say...

“You want me to eat a frog?” “No, Fred, I said, ‘See the fog.’” Misunderstandings like this can be embarrassing and often happen when high-frequency hearing loss makes it hard to tell speech sounds apart. This is called sensorineural hearing loss and is usually caused by aging or exposure to loud noise.

If you notice only one or two of these signs, your hearing might still be fine. Everyone has trouble understanding others or hearing in noisy places sometimes. But if you often notice several of these signs or other symptoms, it’s a good idea to get your hearing checked by a professional.

Hearing loss is well understood, and there are solutions for every budget. Testing at Mid-America Hearing Center is easy, painless, and free. Call us today at (417) 466-7196.
