Sometimes placentas have a little,or sometimes big, extra lobe we typically don’t pull on placentas and as long as there is not any concerning bleeding we just wait for the placenta to come in its own time. We also encourage to nurse your baby and might have you do your own cord traction and maybe move your body to encourage the placenta to release. Rushing and pulling means that extra lobes or part of the placenta might be left behind and that can cause heavy bleeding and also potential infection if it’s left behind and we don’t know about it. This is also why we do a thorough placenta exam which we include you in to marvel over this incredible organ you grew for your baby.
This extra love was not seen on ultrasound by the way! It was a beautiful surprise and makes for a very cool print!

Lovely chilly March day spent harvesting poplar buds, Cottonwood in particular, for making Balm of Gilead. The resin of the poplar bud is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-microbial, and analgesic, used for treating sore muscles and skin irritations. Very short window this time of year to harvest! I covered the buds with olive oil and will strain in 6 weeks.

Of course we are there to guide and help, but definitely love to support families if they want to catch their own babies.( and of course, if you are that mom whose baby came super fast and your baby was born into yours or dad’s hands on the bathroom floor before you could make it into the Birth Center or before we could make it to you ,you know who you are) this sticker is definitely for you!

Birth is SciFi after all! I love the blending of opposites and celebrating and honoring the magical and messy of life and love. Healing and growth, being broken down by life’s big events and then letting the process build us back up again. I get that and I am here to walk with you down these paths.
