Looking for a cleaner… but not that cleaner apparently 🙃

Skirting boards
Light fittings
Picture frames
Door frames
Radiators
Ornaments (properly, not around them)
And you must know what every hoover attachment does

£11 an hour.
One hour a week.
Don’t rush.
Don’t complain.
Don’t ask for more.

Because apparently being a registered nurse means your time is worth more than everyone else’s.

Funny how it’s always
“I’m paying for a service, I expect it done properly”
but the pay barely covers the bus fare and a coffee.

If everyone’s job was paid based on how important they think they are, half the country would be skint by lunchtime.

You don’t want a cleaner.
You want a miracle.
On minimum wage.

Soap scum is that cloudy, chalky buildup you see on showers, tubs, and glass. It’s caused by soap residue mixing with hard-water minerals, body oils, and product residue over time.

To clean it properly, always start on a dry surface. Water dilutes cleaners and makes soap scum harder to break down. Soap scum is mineral-based, so mild acidic cleaners work best on non-stone surfaces like glass, porcelain, and ceramic tile. Let the cleaner sit for 5–10 minutes, then gently agitate with a non-scratch sponge. Rinse well and dry the surface to help prevent it from coming back.

Important note: acidic cleaners should never be used on natural stone such as marble, travertine, limestone, or onyx. Acids can permanently etch and dull stone. For stone showers, use a pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaner and expect multiple light cleanings instead of one aggressive one.

Pro tip: using a squeegee after showers can drastically reduce soap scum buildup, especially on glass.

The Difference Between a Housekeeper and a House Cleaner

There’s been a lot of talk about this lately, so here’s a simple breakdown to clear up the confusion because these two roles are not the same, and understanding the difference helps set fair expectations for everyone involved.

House Cleaner:
A house cleaner focuses on deep cleaning, maintenance cleans, move-in/move-out work, sanitizing, and detailed tasks. Examples include scrubbing bathrooms, degreasing kitchens, dusting, wiping baseboards, cleaning appliances, floors, and walls, and restoring spaces to a clean, healthy environment. This is task-based work, usually scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or as a specialty cleaning. You hire a cleaner when you want the space thoroughly cleaned and refreshed.

Housekeeper:
A housekeeper provides daily-living support inside the home. Examples include tidying, laundry, dishes, bed-making, organizing, meal prep, and general household upkeep. This is routine, ongoing support that helps the home run smoothly between professional cleanings. You hire a housekeeper for daily or weekly help that maintains your household.

Why This Matters:
Clear definitions lead to clear expectations. A client shouldn’t expect a cleaner to fold laundry or do dishes unless it was booked. And a housekeeper isn’t typically doing deep-cleaning or move-out work. Understanding these roles protects your time, your boundaries, your rates, and the respect our industry deserves.

Should You Gift Your Cleaner?

This comes up every year, so let’s talk about it honestly.

First—no, it’s never mandatory. Your cleaner isn’t secretly keeping score but, if you don't tip your cleaner throughout the year, it's a great way to thank them for their hard work all year ❤️

A lot of it depends on how long they’ve been with you. If someone is brand new, most cleaners (myself included!) don’t expect anything at all. But if they’ve been helping you for a while, a small gift can be a really sweet way to say, “Hey, I see your hard work, and I appreciate you.”

What kind of gift should you give?

If your cleaner is a solo cleaner, a personal gift can feel extra special—something that shows you thought of them.

If you have a team coming in, cash or a monetary gift is usually the best route, since it can be shared equally. Even a small amount can be added to the pot.

For us personally:
We’re a team of two, so after our last clean before the holidays, we sit down and evenly divide any monetary gifts. That way it’s fair and simple for everyone.

At the end of the day, whether you choose to give a gift, a card, or just a heartfelt “thank you,” it’s the appreciation that means the most. Cleaners really do feel it.
