An AAA is a bulging or weakening in the lower part of the main artery (the aorta) that runs through your belly. Often, it causes no symptoms at all — that’s why many people don’t even know they have one. 🫀

Possible signs to watch for (when symptoms do appear):
- A throbbing or pulsing sensation near the belly button.
- Persistent, deep pain in the abdomen or side of the belly.
- Back pain — often steady and long-lasting.
- Because AAAs are often “silent,” they can grow without any warning signs.

Aneurysms sometimes only get discovered during routine check-ups or imaging done for other reasons.

If you ever feel any of the signs above — especially pulsation in the belly or unusual back/abdominal pain — it’s worth discussing with your doctor. Early detection can make a big difference in monitoring and care. 🔎

✨️ Employee Spotlight ✨️

This week, we're shining a spotlight on Kelci! Kelci is a scheduling nurse at our Herrin and Mt. Vernon locations. She has been a rockstar when it comes to learning vascular and getting patients scheduled for their procedures. She has also been very helpful and willing to travel to other offices and fill in wherever she is needed. We're so grateful to have her on our team!

"I enjoy working at AST because I get to work alongside some of the most knowledgeable and dedicated medical professionals in the field. Each day working with Dr. Liyanage brings a new learning experience. Whether it's medical related or a weird fact about George Washington - he always keeps me on my toes. As a newer nurse, he never makes me feel inadequate for asking questions. He is always willing to teach. A positive work environment is shaped by the people within it, and I am fortunate to be surrounded by exceptional coworkers who make a meaningful difference every day." - Kelci 🖤

Venous insufficiency ulcers are wounds that form when the veins in the legs don’t return blood efficiently back to the heart. This causes increased pressure in the lower legs, leading to skin breakdown and chronic, slow-healing ulcers. 🫀

🔍 Common attributes:
Located mostly above the ankle
Shallow, irregular edges
Red granulation tissue in the wound bed
Leg swelling, darkened skin, or varicose veins nearby
Skin may feel itchy, hard, or tight

🩺 What contributes to these ulcers?
Damaged or weakened leg veins
History of DVT (Deep vein thrombosis) or varicose veins
Obesity
Prolonged standing or sitting
Age-related vein changes

If you notice a leg wound that isn’t healing, or if swelling and discoloration worsen, it may be time to schedule a consultation with a vascular expert:
