What Is Therapy, Really?

Therapy is not about being “fixed,” because people aren’t broken. At its core, therapy is a supportive process that helps individuals better understand themselves, their experiences, and how those experiences shape thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It creates a safe space to explore challenges, build skills, and develop healthier ways of coping and connecting.

Therapy is also about the body, not just the mind. Our nervous systems hold onto stress, trauma, and learned survival responses. Through therapy, individuals learn how to recognize these patterns, regulate their bodies, and feel safer in the present moment. Healing happens when the body and mind are supported together.

In equine-assisted therapy, learning often happens through experience rather than words. Horses offer honest, nonjudgmental feedback that helps participants practice boundaries, emotional awareness, and trust in real time. These moments can open the door to insight, confidence, and meaningful change.

Therapy looks different for everyone. Some sessions focus on building skills, others on connection, reflection, or simply learning to pause. Progress isn’t linear, and that’s okay. Every step toward understanding and regulation is a step toward growth.

Cold weather reminds us that great horsemanship doesn’t always happen in the saddle. We look at the real-feel temperature, not just the number on the thermometer, to keep both horses and riders safe and comfortable. When riding isn’t the best option, unmounted lessons step in to build knowledge, connection, and confidence from the ground up.

Our cold-weather riding guidelines:

• Low teens or below: No riding - unmounted Horsemanship lesson and use of the Racewood simulator
• Upper teens: Low 20s: Walk only
• Upper 20s: walk, light trot
• Above freezing: Walk, trot & canter lessons

Learning with horses happens in many ways, and sometimes the most important lessons start on the ground.

Mindful Minute: Deep Breathing

At Leg Up Farm, we often notice how our horses use slow, steady breaths to stay calm and present. Deep breathing helps our bodies do the same, especially during busy or overwhelming moments. Try breathing in slowly through your nose, pausing for a moment, and gently breathing out through your mouth. With each exhale, imagine letting go of tension and inviting in calm.

Reflect and ask yourself how you feel. You should feel calmer and more steady in the moment!

An Invitation to Begin Again - Rethinking New Year’s Resolutions!

As the new year begins, many people feel pressured to set resolutions—but nearly 80% are abandoned by February. This isn’t a failure of motivation; it’s a sign that the traditional resolution model often doesn’t work. Psychologists remind us that real, lasting change doesn’t happen because the calendar flips. It happens when we feel ready, supported, and grounded.

Instead of asking, “What do I need to fix?” try asking, “What’s taking shape in my life that I can gently nurture?” Meaningful change is often built through small steps, planning for setbacks, seeking support, and celebrating progress along the way. Some find it helpful to choose a guiding word—like gentle, growth, or connect—as a steady anchor for the year, rather than a rigid goal.

Remember, change isn’t bound to January 1st. You’re allowed to begin whenever you’re ready.
