At Leg Up Farm, we often see how powerful a small pause can be. In moments of frustration, overwhelm, or excitement, taking a brief pause allows the body and mind time to settle before responding. This space can support regulation, encourage thoughtful responses, and strengthen connection with others. Over time, these small pauses can build confidence and help clients feel more in control of their reactions. Even a moment of stillness can create an opportunity for growth.

Learning Thursdays: Sensory Diets

Did you know your child’s body needs sensory input just like it needs food? A sensory diet is a simple, personalized way to help your child stay calm, focused, and ready to take on the day.

It can include:
✔️ Movement (jumping, swinging)
✔️ Deep pressure (hugs, squeezes)
✔️ Heavy work (pushing, carrying)
✔️ Calming activities (quiet play, deep breathing)

🕒 Quick tips to get started:
• Add 5–10 minute activities before tough times (mornings, transitions, homework)
• Keep it simple + consistent
• Follow your child’s cues

The goal? Not just to manage meltdowns, but to prevent them.

Every child is different, and the right support can make all the difference.

Happy first day of Autism Acceptance Month!

We love moments like this from one of our recent sessions. While practicing words like “eat” on their AAC device, exploring food labels, and building pretend play skills, this clever client came up with the entire setup themselves!

It’s moments of creativity, independence, and joy like this that remind us why every small step matters. Let’s celebrate the unique strengths and amazing ideas of individuals on the autism spectrum today and every day!

Happy Monday! As we begin our week, we want to take a moment to be mindful and intentional with the thoughts towards ourselves.

Take a quiet moment to notice how you’re speaking to yourself today. Are your thoughts supportive… or a little too harsh?

Gently shift the tone. Offer yourself the same patience, understanding, and encouragement you would give a friend. Even a small change in your inner dialogue can create space for calm, confidence, and self-compassion.

Just for today, be on your own side.

Learning Thursday | Simple March Activities

This week, we’re sharing easy ways families can support regulation and connection at home. These small, playful activities help children practice self-regulation while strengthening your connection.

🌈 Rainbow Breathing – Reach your arms up as you inhale, then slowly arc them down as you exhale. Repeat 5 times. This helps calm the body and focus the mind.

💪 Heavy Work Helper – Encourage your child to carry laundry, push a basket, try animal walks, or help with gardening. Activities that use their muscles help regulate the nervous system and provide a sense of accomplishment.

💛 Feelings Check-In – Ask simple questions like, “What made your body feel calm today?” or “What felt tricky?” Naming feelings helps children understand and manage emotions.

🎲 Pause & Play – During play, pause before stepping in to help. Let your child initiate ideas, actions, or problem-solving. This builds confidence, independence, and communication skills.

Small, consistent moments like these create big growth in regulation, connection, and confidence. 💛

Unmounted work creates opportunities for problem-solving and independence. On the ground, participants are invited to think critically, make choices, and adjust their approach in real time as they interact with the horse. There’s no “autopilot" as every step requires intention and awareness.

This process builds confidence, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment, as participants see the direct impact of their decisions. In equine-assisted therapy, these moments foster independence and empower individuals to trust themselves, building skills that extend far beyond the barn.

At Leg Up Farm, routines provide a sense of safety, predictability, and comfort for our clients. When daily activities follow a gentle rhythm, the body and mind can relax, making it easier to focus, engage, and feel secure. Even small, familiar routines like grooming a horse, lining up for an activity, or preparing materials, can create moments of calm and stability. These predictable patterns support regulation, confidence, and connection. Noticing the calm within routine reminds us that safety and comfort often come from the simple, consistent moments in our day.

Let’s give back, together!

We’re proud to have a CommunityAid donation box right here on our premises, making it easy for our farm family to give back in a meaningful way.

Have gently used clothing, shoes, or household items? Drop them in the box during your visit and know you’re helping support neighbors in need, one small act of kindness at a time.

Because when we come together, even the smallest gestures can make a big impact.
