I found this little article so helpful to understand the fight-flight-freeze-FAWN ideas being proposed about trauma responses, so I wanted to paste a link here. It might help patients understand it. I like the way it was written.

Another possible response to trauma.

It is with great regret that I am forced to eulogize online someone who meant so much to me.

Dr Gene Nebel and Dr Francis McGovern were my interviewers at Greystone, like so many of us who passed through the state internship program. Gene sent me out of my interview with a pile of audio cassettes of professional presentations and a photocopy of Masters of Madness, all about the NJ psychiatric hospitals.

It was Gene who taught me, like so many of you, how to perform meaningful psychological assessments and write clear reports, alongside other colleagues of his like Dr Ron Schroeder and Dr Tom Kot.

Gene had a background working with people of all levels of impairment and he was gifted at implementing those treatments.

He taught us to read the instructions on the WAIS IV with such precision that you dare not miss a comma!

Gene said that the assessment of general intelligence was so heavily loaded on verbal that the contents of words — grammar and syntax — is a reliable estimate of G (general intelligence).

Gene loved the Exner system of Rorschach interpretation with a passion and was a known scholar of it. He found his patients fascinating and was able to see their resilience. He mentored people through their dissertations generously, and advised on all manner of topics.

He is my imprint of an adult distance cyclist. He was planning to kayak with me on the lake this spring.

Gene’s collections of professional recordings, which he recruited others to help him painstakingly make, are notable. He would distribute them to anyone who even showed a passing interest in the valuable subject matter. Last time I spoke to him he said he was exploring how to make his recordings a legacy gift to the Society for Personality Assessment.

If anyone would like to confer about his legacy I would be open to it, as he has made more than 12,000 recordings last time he told me about it, and I’m sure that was several years ago. We are talking about decades — a lifetime — of psychological learning that he sent out into the world with his students and colleagues like Jor-El sent all the knowledge of the doomed planet Krypton with his only son, Kal-El, Superman.

Dr Gene Nebel was Jor-El. Scientist, humanitarian, friend to all. Pioneer. Happy warrior. Athlete. Magician. Jokester. Prankster. Mentor.

Krypton blew up.
We have a pandemic.

Let’s us all carry his knowledge forward.

Hi everyone. I need some reviews. I published a book about taking down the health insurance industry by making a high-performance, results-driven psychotherapy that does not accept health insurance, on principle. It is a legitimate, behavioral therapy that is likely to be highly effective, for several reasons, not the least of which is the power of perception and self-monitoring. But that is not the point. The point is to show the insurance companies what will happen if they keep trying to "quality control" care by denials, authorizations, re-authorizations, and now outcome measurement to the point where providers like me are dropping out of network like flies.

So, it is highly critical of the health insurance industry, which is accused of being in the business of denying care in the book.

The book is semi-satire. It is in an ironic, comedic voice. I would like some reviews, though. If clinicians practice this way, they will make money and sink the insurance industry. Patients will have good "outcomes" but nary a psychotherapist will practice high quality, personalized, extended treatment. Which might not be a bad thing for anyone, from a radical behaviorist view.

I'll gladly send you a free copy if you PM me your email address. Thanks!

Thank you.
