Alzheimer's disease is a very common disease that causes memory loss as well as loss of other important mental functions. While nearly 5 million Americans already are diagnosed with the disease, the number is expected to significantly rise due to the rising age limit of our population. While there is still a lot that doctors don't know about the disease, there are common factors that are known to increase the risk of Alzheimer's. These factors include your age (your risk increases after age 65), your genetics, your family history, heart conditions, a history of head trauma and even smoking.
Alzheimer's disease affects nearly 5 million Americans, a number that's expected to balloon to 13.8 million by 2050.
