In this month where many countries recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we have cancer on our mind in the community, where it seems that all of us know someone who currently has cancer or has struggled with this disease. A highly knowledgeable doctor on the front lines of the fight against cancer, the GWI Wellness for Cancer Initiative co-chair and surgical oncologist Dr. Shyamali Singhal, MD, PhD, FACS, shares some actionable recommendations to prevent cancer in a recent blog post on the GWI Wellness for Cancer Initiative page. Dr. Singhal says the genetic origins of cancer only account for about 10% of cases, but 30-50% of cancer diagnoses are preventable with minimal changes to your lifestyle.

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin.

Whether it's dark spots from suffering from acne, spending too much time in the sun, or just genetics – hyperpigmentation is something that can affect everyone.

There are three main types of hyperpigmentation: sunspots, which are most common in fair skin and appear from overexposure to the sun, often increasing with age.

Stay tuned for more information on skincare.

Treatments of hyperpigmentation vary, and depending on the severity, Dr. Singhal recommends consulting a dermatologist for a meeting and customized healing program. That said, even though in-office procedures and treatments like lasers or prescriptions can reap some benefit, making important additions to your skincare routine and product lineup can do wonders for issues of hyperpigmentation too.

You can treat hyperpigmentation with high-powered active ingredients and in-office procedures, Dr. Singhal tells us. Gentle yet effective cleaners, like Hope & Beautys’ Quiet Wash, and lasers are commonly used to treat hyperpigmentation. IPL laser involves light-based energy pulsed onto the skin while simultaneously targeting blood vessels. The light seeks out the discoloration in the skin to lift it up and out.

Subungual hematoma is the medical term for bleeding and bruising under the nail. This is usually the result of some kind of injury to the blood vessels under the nail bed.

Some chemotherapy drugs, namely docetaxel, paclitaxel, sorafenib, and sunitinib, can cause bleeding under the nail, as the most common side-effect of these drugs.

We are in agreement too many toxic chemicals in makeup and cosmetic products.

Toxic "forever chemicals" are widespread and unlabeled in makeup, scientists say. A new study found indicators of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in roughly half of mascaras, lipsticks and foundations tested. The chemicals have been linked to numerous health impacts, including certain cancers.

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, but Dr. Shyamali Singhal, surgical oncologist and founder of H&B, says it is also important to remember to protect our skin throughout the whole year. Cancer patients especially those on treatment are extremely sensitive to the sun and can get burned with much less exposure. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), ultra-violet (UV) radiation exposure is the root cause of most skin cancers. Let’s begin with some basic terms: what is ultraviolet radiation? Ultraviolet (UV) radiation are invisible rays that are part of the energy that comes from the sun. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays is known to cause damage to the skin and it can certainly cause different types of skin cancer.

It’s always important to stay safe when your family is playing in the sun. While it may seem like a sunburn is just a mild nuisance, it can leave long-lasting damage to the skin. According to some studies, even just one blistering sunburn during childhood can double the chances of developing melanoma later in life. With summer in full swing, it’s the perfect time to head outdoors and enjoy the sun and warmth. But are you protecting yourself from potential risks?

How it all began...

Dr. Shyamali Singhal, Founder of Hope & Beauty has over twenty years of experience as a Surgical Oncologist, and in that time she has obtained understanding and deep insight into all of the side-effects that radiation and chemotherapy can have on the body of a cancer patient.

“Cancer diagnosis and treatment can cause lasting trauma to patients bodies. Often, it has a devastating impact on minds too. That’s why acts of self-care, however small, are so important for all patients with a cancer diagnosis. Taking time - be it a day, an hour or even just a few minutes - to look after yourself, mentally and physically, can help manage the many issues the disease brings”, states Dr. Singhal.

She decided to help cancer patients by applying her expertise in selecting products that are suitable for cancer patients. Her mission with Hope & Beauty is to assist cancer patients as they’re recovering from cancer treatment. Dr. Singhal recognizes how important it is for cancer patients to look and feel good about themselves while they fight cancer, and recover from it.
