The stories we are told and the perceptions we have about types of people often come from some sort of propaganda that benefits those in power. The transformation of "wise women" into persecuted "witches" represents one of history's darkest chapters, driven by interconnected forces of power, fear, and social control.

The medieval Christian Church sought to consolidate its authority by eliminating competing belief systems, labeling traditional healing, midwifery, and folk spirituality as demonic witchcraft to discredit alternative sources of community knowledge. Witch hunts disproportionately targeted women, particularly those who were independent, outspoken, or owned property, becoming a convenient tool for silencing those who challenged patriarchal structures.

Widows, herbalists, midwives, and unmarried women proved especially vulnerable. Economic factors also played a role, as accusations during times of hardship provided scapegoats for misfortune while enabling property seizure from the accused. The witch hunt craze, most intense from the 15th-17th centuries, fed on mass hysteria and paranoia, with torture extracting false confessions that created self-perpetuating cycles of persecution.

As formal male-dominated medical establishments developed, they used witch accusations to eliminate competition from traditional female healers. The 1487 publication of the Malleus Maleficarum provided a deeply male oriented "how-to" guide for identifying and prosecuting witches, portraying women as inherently susceptible to demonic influence. Between 40,000 to 60,000 people (possibly more) were executed during this era, with women comprising 75-80% of victims. This tragic transformation illustrates how healing knowledge and female independence became criminalized when they threatened existing power structures.

Consider some of these religious based political actions from our past, and question whether we are still seeing them play out in the United States today.
