🦷 Dental Myth vs. Fact

Myth: Dentures last forever.

Fact: Dentures typically need to be updated every 5–10 years due to natural changes in your mouth.

Over time, your gums and jaw shape shift—which can cause dentures to become loose, uncomfortable, or less effective. Well-fitting dentures should support your smile, your confidence, and your oral health… not cause irritation or difficulty eating.

If your dentures feel loose, cause sore spots, or make chewing harder than it should be, it may be time for an adjustment or replacement. Regular dental check-ups can help ensure your dentures stay comfortable and functional for years to come!

✨ A healthy smile evolves—and your dental care should too.

🦷✨ Happy Wednesday from Harbour Place Dental! ✨🦷

"Be the reason someone smiles today." – Roy T. Bennett

It’s November 5th, a special day to reflect and take action. Did you know

• In 1935, the board game Monopoly made its debut and became a global icon of strategy and playful competition.

• In 1994, George Foreman made history by becoming heavyweight boxing champion at age 45 — proof that it's never too late to go for greatness.

At Harbour Place Dental, our mission is to help every patient be the reason someone smiles today. Whether that’s your own confident smile or brightening someone else’s day with a kind grin — we’re here for you.

Just as Monopoly became a household classic and George Foreman proved that timing and determination matter, your smile matters. One check‑up, one clean, one thoughtful care plan can make a big difference.

If you’ve been putting off your next cleaning or thinking about cosmetic dental work, let’s make today the day to take action. Book an appointment, pop in for a consultation, and let’s create the smile that makes somebody’s day—yes, even yours.

🦷 Gum Disease May Leave You Itching

We often think of gum disease as something that only affects the mouth—but new research suggests its impact may reach much further. A recent study found that people with periodontitis (gum disease) have a 2.4 times higher risk of developing atopic dermatitis (eczema) than those with healthy gums. This link was seen across ages and genders, highlighting the important connection between oral health and overall wellness.

But there’s good news—regular professional dental cleanings (scaling) may help reduce this risk significantly:

✅ Patients with gum disease who received scaling had a 67% lower risk of developing eczema.
✅ Those who had scaling four or more times saw an 86% lower risk.

This study followed over 77,000 adults using health insurance data, offering strong evidence that gum health and skin health may be more closely connected than we realized.

While the research can’t account for every lifestyle factor (like diet or brushing habits), the message is clear:

Taking care of your gums isn’t just about your smile—it may help protect your skin, too.
If it’s been a while since your last cleaning, now is a great time to schedule one!

🦷 Dental Q & A of the week 🦷

Q: Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?
A: Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum inflammation, usually caused by plaque buildup. It may seem counterintuitive, but the solution isn’t to stop brushing or flossing—it’s to be more consistent and gentle. If you’re just getting back into a good oral care routine, some initial bleeding is normal, but if it continues, it’s time to see us. Gum disease is treatable when caught early!

🧠 Gum Disease May Raise Stroke Risk — Even Damage the Brain!

Two new studies published in Neurology Open Access reveal a powerful connection between oral health and brain health. Researchers found that people with gum disease and cavities showed more white matter changes in their brains—an early sign of inflammation and small blood vessel damage linked to strokes.

⚠️ The Numbers Tell the Story:
Individuals with both gum disease and cavities had an 86% higher risk of stroke compared to those with healthy gums and teeth. According to Dr. Souvik Sen, this “double trouble” can also double your risk for heart problems.

🪥 The Good News:
Consistent oral hygiene and regular dental visits were associated with an 81% lower risk of stroke. While the studies don’t prove cause and effect, they strongly suggest that maintaining healthy gums can protect both your smile and your brain.

🌍 A Global Health Issue:
Gum disease and cavities affect 3.5 billion people worldwide. In the U.S. alone, over 795,000 strokes occur every year.

Your mouth truly is the gateway to your overall health — so brush, floss, and visit your dentist regularly to keep more than just your teeth safe!

In a landmark breakthrough, researchers at King’s College London have engineered early-stage human tooth organoids in vitro, using stem cells and custom bio-engineered hydrogels.

These lab-grown “tooth germs” replicated key development phases — enamel, dentin and pulp formation — within a precisely tuned 3-D matrix that mimics natural tooth embryology.

Unlike traditional implants or fillings, this approach focuses on true regeneration: a biologically-compatible structure grown from cells, aiming for seamless integration and long-term durability.

While still experimental and not yet ready for clinical use, this research opens a door to a future where tooth loss could be treated by regrowth, not replacement—and the era of purely mechanical dentistry may begin to shift.

🦷 **Myth vs Fact: Charcoal Toothpaste Edition! ** 🦷

🦷 **Myth: ** Brushing your teeth with charcoal makes them whiter.
💡 **Fact: ** While charcoal toothpaste *can* remove surface stains, using it too often may do more harm than good!
Charcoal is abrasive and can erode your tooth enamel, which doesn't grow back. Over time, this can lead to sensitivity and long-term damage to your teeth. 😬

🎃🦷 Spooky Season Smiles: Halloween

Dental Emergencies & How to Handle Them! 🦷🎃

Halloween is all fun and games—until a broken tooth or candy-related mishap creeps up! 👻 At Harbour Place Dental, we see a few common dental “scares” this time of year. Here’s what to watch out for and how to keep your smile safe:

🧛‍♀️ Common Halloween Dental Emergencies

🍭 Chipped or broken teeth from biting hard candies or popcorn kernels.

🦷 Loose fillings or crowns dislodged by sticky treats like caramels or taffy.

😬 Tooth pain or sensitivity after indulging in too many sweets.

😢 Gum irritation or cuts from sharp candy edges or costume mishaps.

🕸️ How to Prevent Them

Choose soft treats like chocolate instead of hard or sticky candies.

Avoid chewing ice or hard popcorn kernels.

Keep sugary snacking to mealtime and rinse with water afterward.

Always brush and floss before bed—especially after Halloween night!

🩹 What to Do If It Happens

Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress for swelling.

Save any broken pieces or dislodged crowns.

Call your dentist as soon as possible—quick treatment prevents further damage.

👩‍⚕️ The team at Harbour Place Dental is here to help if Halloween treats turn into tricks for your teeth.
