As families prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, expect heavier traffic, busy travel corridors, and more activity across the county. Whether you’re hitting the road, hosting loved ones, or heading out the night before Thanksgiving, here are key safety reminders to help keep everyone safe.

On the Roads: Expect Heavier Traffic

Thanksgiving week consistently brings some of the busiest travel days of the year. If you’re driving:

Plan ahead: Give yourself extra time to get where you’re going. Expect congestion on major roads throughout the week.
Avoid distractions: Put the phone down, focus on the road, and keep your attention on changing traffic conditions.
Slow down: Speeding and aggressive driving contribute to crashes, especially during high-volume travel.
Wear your seat belt: Every ride, every time.
Watch for pedestrians: With kids out of school and families walking to gatherings, remain alert in neighborhoods and crosswalks.

Be patient and courteous. Everyone is trying to get somewhere.

Thanksgiving is the number one day of the year for home cooking fires in the U.S., and leaving food unattended is the leading cause. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking accounts for 80% of Thanksgiving Day home fires and 40% of related injuries.

With crowded kitchens, hot stoves and busy households, a simple distraction can quickly lead to danger. But home fires aren't the only concern during the holiday. Thanksgiving also brings an increase in medical emergencies including burns, cuts, car accidents and cardiac-related incidents as people travel, cook and gather.

That’s why the Knox County Hospital District and the American Red Cross is encouraging people to take steps to prevent home fires and learn lifesaving skills that can make a critical difference when seconds count.

Distracted driving causes too many accidents on our roads. Put down the phone — that message can wait!

Distracted driving is a growing problem, accounting for at least 12 percent of road crashes worldwide. Phones don't help. But personality and gender may play a role, too, researchers say.

Are you a coffee drinker? A little caffeine is fine, but make sure you aren’t doing it or you could be putting stress on your cardiovascular system.

In moderate doses caffeine has mainly positive effects for most people. But it increases production of cortisol, which can lead to health problems including anxiety, weight gain and heart disease.

Ten things to help fall and the holiday season to be safe, happy and healthy.

1. Prioritize drinking water to stay hydrated.

2. Eat balanced meals (and of course, enjoy sweet treats in moderation!).

3. Change your smoke alarm batteries. An uptick in heater and candle use means more reason to have your smoke alarms ready to go.

4. Get your flu shot. Encourage your friends to get their flu shot, too.

5. Inspect your heater and use space heaters correctly.

6. Update your car emergency kit. Winter is coming — you might as well prepare now. Keep things like blankets, flashlights, and water in your car just in case. Find more information on what should be included at ready.gov.

7. Try some new fall veggies! Farmers’ markets are still happening. Maybe try some fall recipes!

8. Prevent falls! Whether it’s off a ladder while cleaning gutters or tripping over the electric cord connected to your jack-o-lanterns – do what you can to prevent injury.

9. Get your respiratory virus shots and stay up to date on vaccines.

10. Check in on yourself and your friends.
