EMPATHY MATTERS
A young man was on a train with his two little ones, ages five and four. The children were full of energy, laughing and playing as if they had just eaten twenty candy bars. Some passengers smiled at their innocence and zest for life, but others grew irritated by the noise and disruption.

The young father sat quietly, staring out the window, lost in thought. It was clear his mind was elsewhere. Finally, a woman nearby, unable to concentrate on her book, spoke up.
“Sir,” she said sharply, “could you please settle your children down? I’m trying to read.”

The man blinked, almost as if waking from a fog. He looked at her with tears welling in his eyes.

“I’m so sorry,” he said softly. “I just received a call from my mother-in-law. While we were visiting my parents, my wife was in a fatal car accident. I’m just trying to figure out how I’m going to explain this to these innocent kids.”

In that moment, the entire mood in the train car changed. The irritation faded, replaced by compassion, heartbreak, and understanding.

This story reminds us that everyone we meet is carrying something we cannot see. A little patience and kindness can make all the difference.

🌿 There’s no “right” way to grieve.
Some days you cry. Some days you smile. Some days you just breathe.

Don’t let anyone tell you how long it should take or what it should look like.

Grief is love with nowhere to go—and that love never fades. 💔💫

At Burns-Kish Funeral Homes, we believe there’s no greater calling than to serve others during their time of loss. Every family we meet reminds us of the strength that comes from compassion and community.

Munster’s Most Established Family-Owned Funeral Home

An Interview with Owner/Manager Brian Burns

Brian Burns, Owner and Manager of Burns-Kish Funeral Homes in Munster and Hammond, Indiana, has been in the family business for over 30 years. He started working for his Dad, Tom Burns, at age 13, washing cars and cleaning. Brian took over Burns-Kish at the beginning of January, 2017. He’s a fourth generation Funeral Director. Here he sits down with Emily Halgrimson for a chat.

EH: Did you enjoy working for your Dad, Tom Burns? What was he like as a boss?

BB: Sure, he was easy going and generous, yet firm. He taught me how to do things the right way, no shortcuts. He’s always been a real people-oriented and friendly guy. He’s been active with churches and community groups for decades, everyone in town knows Tom Burns.
