The new 2025 AHA guidelines have been released.

One notable change has been introduced that will hopefully, and finally, make EMS providers realize that their expensive LUCAS device doesn’t make a bit of difference with patient outcomes. This has been known for the past few years with solid evidence against routine use.

The AHA formally recommends AGAINST the routine use of mechanical CPR devices.

EXCERPT

“Studies comparing mechanical to manual CPR have shown that mechanical CPR is no better than manual CPR in improving patient survival. At present, the routine use of mechanical CPR devices is not recommended (COR 3-No Benefit, LOE B-R) but may be considered in specific circumstances in which high-quality CPR cannot be maintained or for health care professional safety, such as during transport to a hospital (COR 2b, LOE C-LD).”

Another notable change deals with FBAO in adults. Back blows are now recommended first step for conscious patients.

Excerpt

“Based on additional evidence of effectiveness and safety, the use of back blows is now recommended as the initial step for conscious adults with FBAO, followed by abdominal thrusts (COR 1, LOE B-NR).113 As in 2020, once the person becomes unresponsive, the recommendation is to initiate CPR (COR 1, LOE C-LD), with inspection of the mouth for presence of a foreign body prior to delivery of breaths (COR 1, LOE C-EO). A new algorithm for treatment of FBAO for adults is included.”

💓 Why Compression Depth Matters in CPR 💓

When performing CPR, the depth of compressions isn’t just a detail—it’s the difference between life and death.

👉 Too shallow? Blood won’t circulate effectively, meaning vital organs like the brain and heart don’t get the oxygen they need.
👉 Too deep? Risk of injury increases without improving circulation.

✅ The recommended depth:

Adults: at least 2 inches (5 cm)

Children: about 2 inches (but not more than 2.4 inches / 6 cm)

Infants: about 1.5 inches (4 cm)

🔑 Consistency is key—strong, steady compressions keep blood flowing until professional help arrives.

✅ How Does the Epi in an EpiPen Work?

When someone experiences a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), every second counts. An EpiPen delivers epinephrine, a life-saving medication, that works by:

⚡ Opening the airways – helps the person breathe more easily.
❤️ Increasing blood pressure – keeps blood flowing to vital organs.
🛑 Reducing swelling – especially in the face, lips, and throat.

👉 Use it in the outer thigh, hold for 3 seconds, then call emergency services immediately.

Your fast action can save a life.

🌡️ Heat Stroke vs. Heat Exhaustion: Know the Difference! ☀️

Staying safe in hot weather is critical. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke share some similarities, but heat stroke is a medical emergency 🚨. Here’s how to tell them apart:

🔶 Heat Exhaustion (Warning Stage)

Heavy sweating 😓

Pale, cool, clammy skin

Dizziness or fainting

Weak, rapid pulse ❤️‍🩹

Muscle cramps 💢

Headache & nausea 🤢

👉 What to do: Move to a cool place, sip water, loosen clothing, and rest.

🔴 Heat Stroke (Emergency 🚑)

Hot, red, dry or damp skin

Body temperature 103°F / 39.5°C or higher 🌡️

Rapid, strong pulse

Confusion, slurred speech, or disorientation 🌀

Loss of consciousness or seizures

👉 What to do: Call 911 immediately. Move the person to a cooler place, lower their body temp with cool cloths or ice packs. Do NOT give fluids if unconscious.

💡 Remember: Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke if untreated. Stay hydrated, take breaks, and check on vulnerable individuals (kids, elderly, outdoor workers, pets).
