Q. What do the medical terms actually mean that are used to describe SPINAL DISC problems?
A. Medically there are several terms used to describe the various kinds of disc damage.
✅ Often these terms are confused or used inaccurately.
✅ A better understanding of the exact nature of the disc damage can lead to more successful treatment.
🔵 Protrusion – a bulging of the annulus fibrosus but no herniation of the nucleus pulposus
🔵 Herniation – some material from the nucleus passes through a defect in the annulus but not necessarily beyond the limit of the outer annulus
🔵 Extrusion – some material from the nucleus herniates outside of the outer annulus
🔵 Sequestration – some material from the nucleus herniates outside of the outer annulus and becomes separated from the rest of the nucleus pulposus
