SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (also known as “food stamps”). Many Tennesseans with disabilities use SNAP to help pay for food. SNAP benefits are going to pause on November 1 because of the federal government shutdown. If you get SNAP, you will NOT get it in November until the government funds SNAP.

Here is what you need to know to get food and help feed your neighbors:

1. You can use the funds already on your EBT card from October. You won’t get any more until the government funds SNAP.

2. You can find a food bank to get food or donate to help others at www.feedtn.org

3. We also recommend you contact Tennessee Disability Pathfinder if you need help: www.tnpathfinder.org

4. If you get food from a food pantry, non-profit or faith organization, or people that you trust, it will NOT impact your other benefits like SSI, Medicaid, or housing.

5. If you take cash or a gift card to pay for food, it might impact your other benefits. Check with your benefits counselor. Learn more: https://nacdd.org/protecting-your-benefits-what-to-know-about-accepting-gifts/

6. It should not impact your other benefits if someone puts money into your ABLE account, as long as the money does not go over the annual limit.

7. SNAP benefits will not start again until the federal government funds SNAP.

8. The Tennessee Department of Human Services has a web page with updates for people who get SNAP: www.tn.gov/humanservices/federal-shutdown hwre

💙 Continuing our Down Syndrome Awareness Month Celebration! 💙

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on our amazing Embrace group — a community program that we provide services for, which is full of music, laughter, and connection! 🎶✨

Each week in music therapy, these incredible individuals come together to build confidence and connection through rhythm, song, and movement. While the sessions are full of smiles and dancing, they’re also hard at work practicing important social and communication skills, including:

🤝 Teamwork
🗣️ Expressing ideas through music and conversation
🎵 Listening and responding to others
💃 Coordinating movement in group activities

We’re incredibly proud of the joy and community this group brings each week to Embrace!

Huge shoutout to WeHero!! We are so stoked to have received over 200 tambourines from this incredible organization! We Hero “designs, plans, and executes corporate volunteer, team-building, and employee engagement experiences that create social impact” — and that impact is so tangible here at Heart & Soul.

The time and thoughtfulness put into each tambourine along with the intentional packaging - it all just means so much to us. It has been so fun watching kids pick out tambourines that have drawings or colors that resonate with them. It’s amazing to think that someone took the time to make them, and the child is now benefiting without even knowing who specifically made it. That’s that agape kind of love. DM if you're interested in getting your hands on one of these!!
