Anyone else’s sensory seeker do the happy hop when they’re excited? 🐰✨

I swear it’s one of my favorite things — that burst of full-body joy that just has to come out as movement. Kids who feel the world deeply often express it deeply, too, and it’s honestly such a gift to witness.

Here’s to big feelings, big smiles, and big hops. 💛

Ellie learns language the way many gestalt language processors do — through intonation first, full-body Melody-of-Speech, and rich, meaningful scripts.

She’s an intonation baby, and that’s a completely valid developmental path.

Not all kids start with single words → phrases → sentences. Some start with chunks, scripts, movie lines, songs, or the emotional “tune” of communication long before the individual words break apart.

As an SLP and as her mom, I get a front-row seat to a communication style that’s often misunderstood but incredibly rich. They’re processing language differently — and beautifully.

If you have an intonation baby or a little script-singer at home, you’re not alone. Their voices matter. Their way of learning matters. 💛

As a society, we are overworking autistic children. Let me explain.

So many families are doing everything right. School, ABA, speech, OT, social skills… sometimes five or six days a week. These kids are working harder than most adults I know — and they’re exhausted.

I’m not anti-ABA. I collaborate with incredible BCBAs all the time, and I’ve seen truly compassionate, child-centered work. But even good therapy can become too much when a child’s nervous system never gets a break.

Therapy should support regulation, not drain it.
Sometimes the most therapeutic thing we can do is decrease demands — not add another session.

Kids need rest, play, and joy just as much as structured learning. Because a regulated child learns more in five minutes of connection than in five hours of pressure. 💛

✨ Progress doesn’t come from exhaustion. It comes from balance.

🎈 Balloon Animals = Cheap Magic

Whether you’re a parent or a speech therapist — this is one of my favorite low-cost ways to spark language!

Balloon animals are affordable, magical, and full of communication moments.

💬 You can model:
– Action words: blow, twist, pop, go!
– Colors: red, blue, green!
– Description: wow, silly, surprised!
– Requests: help me, do more, again!

All while following your child’s lead.

🪄 You don’t need fancy materials to build language — just connection, curiosity, and a little air.

👻 You know what’s really spooky?

When speech therapy actually feels like… therapy. 😱

When parents watch my sessions, they might wonder why they’re paying me to play with their child. 🤪
But here’s the truth — the best therapy doesn’t look like work at all.

A child’s brain learns through connection, joy, and play. When therapy feels fun, the child’s guard drops, their curiosity kicks in, and real learning happens.

So if it looks like we’re playing — that’s because we are! 🎃

Because play is the work of childhood, and the most meaningful progress happens when a child feels safe, engaged, and understood. 💬🧡

💬 Let’s talk about verbal routines.

I wasn’t aware of them until I had a neurodivergent daughter of my own.

Sometimes she’ll ask, “What’s your name, Mommy?” and I’ll reply, “My name is Mommy. What’s your name?” She answers proudly with her own name — even though she already knows it.

It’s her verbal routine — a familiar little script that brings her comfort, joy, and connection.

Clinically, these are known as verbal routines or delayed echolalia — when a child repeats familiar phrases they’ve heard before. For children who are gestalt language processors or otherwise neurodivergent, these patterns are a natural and meaningful part of language development.

So why do verbal routines happen?

✨ Comfort and regulation – Repetition feels safe and predictable. These phrases can help a child self-regulate or transition between activities.
✨ Connection – Verbal routines are often used to engage socially in a way that feels familiar and successful.
✨ Language learning – Gestalt language processors learn in chunks before breaking language into smaller parts. These scripts are the foundation for future spontaneous speech.
✨ Emotional expression – A repeated phrase may hold emotional meaning or be tied to a happy memory.
✨ Sensory enjoyment – Sometimes children simply love the rhythm, melody, or feel of the words.

What may look like “repetition” is often rich with purpose — a bridge between understanding and expression, connection and calm.

Do you notice your child using any verbal routines or favorite phrases? 💛
