This is such a good reminder to me today…. So much going on in my busy head, illness going around this time of year, lots of cool gray days… be kind to yourself.

I was working with a patient who has been progressing well with an overactive detrusor muscle causing urinary incontinence and urge frequency a few days ago. They came in and the primary time they were experiencing symptoms was after shopping….hmmm. But they didn’t have a leak or urge until after they bent to put groceries away and then the detrusor would kick in and cause a leak due to increased abdominal pressure. As we talked more, I realized this patient had the traits of an HSP and that shopping in places with harsh lighting, noise, etc made her feel overwhelmed and almost physically sick in her body at times depending on how long she was there. I am an HSP and can totally relate! But it got me to thinking…. Are HSPs more likely to have OAB due to hyper regulation of their entire system? Could she do relaxation strategies (use essential oils, peppermints, earbuds with calming music, wear sunglasses, diaphragmatic breathing) while at the store and when she arrives home and get rid of that leak??

Research has shown that women’s (and I think this info can be extrapolated to men as well) pelvic floor muscles respond more vigorously to stress than ANY OTHER MUSCLE in the body. Even more so than those tight upper traps we all have! We also know that anxiety (most general term in the world) is common with OAB. Afterall, your bladder is a muscle.

Here is my tracking chart on Inito! So cool to be able to economically test my hormones.

I am 51 and have not had a period start since 7/15, started having hot flashes and vaginal dryness beginning of August, and became curious about what was going on with my hormone levels. You can see from the chart that my estrogen was way low and FSH was high. FSH rises to try to encourage a follicle with an egg in it to start the maturation process around mid period to try getting pregnant again (little does it know, my husband has had a vasectomy 😂)! The estrogen rose and the FSH dropped so that means that my body found a follicle but the fact that my LH stayed low (it rises when your egg is released from the follicle) tells me that my 51 year old egg was not viable and so my progesterone (prepares the uterus for implantation of a viable fertilized egg) stayed stable and low. No period since the start of my current 54 day cycle and it would appear that my hormone levels have somewhat leveled out, no hot flashes, moodiness, lack of energy or vaginal dryness and my FSH just continues to drop.

Monitoring my hormones has helped me to be like “ bless your heart for trying” instead of “what the hell are you doing” 😂. Get curious ladies, your body wants to be listened to and understood!!

OPERATION BRAIN FOG, HOT FLASHES COMMENCE

Sooo excited!!! Got my new Inito Monitor (I don’t get any kickback on any products)! It’s designed primarily for hormone monitoring for those having issues with infertility but I am using it as a way to monitor changes as I begin to have more hot flashes and skipped periods (signs of low estrogen).

I have been in perimenopause for the past 4 years and have been able effectively use OTC progesterone cream to remedy heavy periods, short cycles, and poor sleep. I can use an OTC estrogen cream but am going to try eating more phytoestrogens and see if that helps first.

I am not medically recommending OTC hormone creams but merely sharing my personal journey. Those of you who have worked with me know that I am a “do it yourselfer” plus lab work is expensive and my deductible is high 😂

Looking 👀 for book 📖 to read on health??

Perimenopause has put my knowledge as a Pelvic PT, CYT, and health coach to the test. I had tried everything to decrease the tension and bloated feeling in my stomach, periodic constipation, improve my sleep, and increase my energy. Yoga, chiro, learning to be more aware of my emotions through journaling, and progesterone cream helped, but this book bought together many of the strategies I use in the context of a schedule that is aligned with the rhythm of nature.

Did you know that men have pelvic floor issues too? Even better, did you know that erectile dysfunction, male pelvic pain, constipation, urinary frequency during the day and night can be treated conservatively with Pelvic Health Physical Therapy? And even better, most people do not even need a doctor's referral (Medicare and MCOs, HMOs are the exception are the exception and do require one).
