Subject: KY Board of Nursing | GLP-1 Medications


The Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) was recently notified by the National Association of the Boards of Pharmacy regarding information on compounded GLP-1 medications such as Semaglutide and Tirzepatide.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that they have received several complaints of unapproved GLP-1medications being obtained and administered to patients. These illegally obtained medications often come from 3rd party sites and may have labels that have the following information:
* a state-licensed pharmacy that had no role in the drug’s production, sale, or distribution; or
* what appears to be a fictitious state-licensed pharmacy

Additionally, medications have also been dispensed without a valid prescription.

As an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), you are responsible for ensuring that the medications you obtain to prescribe and administer to your clients are FDA-approved and are obtained from a state-licensed pharmacy.

The KBN has the following information on the FAQ page as well as many other topics of frequent concern.

Is it acceptable for an APRN to compound or obtain a compounded GLP-1 medication from a pharmacy for administration rather than obtain a commercially available drug such as Semaglutide?

No, the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy has provided guidance related to this matter. Specifically, the Federal Drug & Cosmetic Act does not allow compounding of “drug products that are essentially copies of a commercially available drug product.” Additionally, the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy provided guidance from 201 KAR 2:076, which prohibits the compounding of essential copies of a commercially available drug product unless authorized by 21 U.S.C. 353(a). This is enforceable by the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy for individuals or entities licensed or permitted by the Commonwealth.
