Hands-On Treatment May Benefit Bruxism Patients.

Bruxism is a condition characterized by involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth, typically occurring during sleep or periods of stress, and is often associated with jaw muscle pain, tooth wear, and temporomandibular joint symptoms. In a recent study, researchers found that applying myofascial release—a hands-on technique in which a doctor of chiropractic uses manual pressure (with the hands, elbow, or a tool) to reduce muscle tension and improve tissue mobility—to the masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles led to significant improvements in jaw and neck pain, as well as maximal mouth opening, in individuals with bruxism. These findings support the use of myofascial release as part of a multimodal approach to managing bruxism.

Is Internet Addiction Linked to Psychological Distress?

Assessments completed by 7,278 university students revealed that 38.6% exhibited signs of Internet addiction, which was associated with higher levels of psychological distress, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. These findings suggest that strategies aimed at reducing time spent online could benefit college students, particularly those under treatment for psychological disorders.

Effective Treatment for Chronic Low Back Pain.

A recent study found that myofascial release combined with stabilization exercises is an effective combination to improve pain, balance, muscle function, flexibility, muscle tone, disability, and autonomic regulation in chronic low back pain patients. Doctors of chiropractic often use these and other conservative treatments in the management of chronic low back pain.

Early Life Farm Exposure May Reduce Allergy Risk.

A study of infants from Old Order Mennonite farming families found that children raised in agricultural environments had higher levels of IgG and IgA antibodies, more advanced B-cell development, and a lower risk of food allergies than peers raised in urban settings. The findings suggest that greater microbial exposure early in life may positively influence immune development and reduce allergy risk.

Just 20 Minutes of Exercise Twice a Week May Prevent Dementia.

Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, researchers found that older adults with mild-cognitive impairment were less likely to progress to dementia over an eight-year time period if they exercised at moderate-intensity—like brisk walking, for example—for at least 20 minutes twice a week. The findings demonstrate the ability of regular physical activity to delay or possibly prevent dementia.

Poor Cardiometabolic Health Influences Dementia Risk.

Using data from the China Kadoorie Biobank study, researchers found that individuals with a history of hypertension or diabetes were 21% and 36% more likely, respectively, to develop dementia over a twelve-year period. These findings suggest that preventive strategies targeting cardiometabolic disorders may also protect brain health.

Insufficient Sleep Linked to Shorter Life Expectancy.

Oregon Health & Science University researchers report that aside from smoking, failure to consistently sleep seven to nine hours a night may be the strongest risk factor of early death—even more than poor diet, physical inactivity, and loneliness. The authors note that sufficient sleep is essential for optimal cardiovascular, immune, and brain health.

Midlife Depressive Symptoms Linked to Dementia.

Using data from the Whitehall II study, researchers found that the following depressive symptoms at midlife are associated with an elevated risk of dementia in old age: losing confidence, not able to face up to problems, not feeling warmth and affection for others, nervous and strung-up all the time, not satisfied with the way tasks are carried out, and difficulties concentrating.

Lifestyle Factors Linked to Low Back Pain.

While we normally think of poor posture or improper lifting technique as risk factors for low back pain, lifestyle choices can also set the stage for the condition. In a recent study, researchers found that smoking, alcohol consumption, high body mass index, and dyslipidemia are significantly associated with low back pain, while smoking and physical inactivity are linked to more severe pain and a greater likelihood of progressing to chronic low back pain.
