Blessed. That was the word to describe 2024. Our family moved from Richmond, VA to Murray, KY and our girls became BIG SISTERS about a week after we moved! 🤪it’s hard to believe we are coming up on a year since the biggest whirlwind (in 23 days, we packed our house, moved, renovated a house and had a baby). WHEW! All that to say, we were so BLESSED in 2024, and we’re ready to take 2025 head on! My doula calendar is open and I’m ready to chat about all things baby! DM me and let’s Doula this!

My grandmother bought me a pair of REAL red fringe cowgirl boots back in 1994 for her "cowboy" themed second wedding. I know, I know, how Alabama of us, right? But she was happy and that's all that mattered; that AND the red fringe "REAL" cowgirl boots. For maybe two weeks or so before my Gran's wed...

Strength. That’s one word that comes to my mind about this day, one year ago. My beautiful friend labored with more strength than I’ve ever witnessed. Her birth plan didn’t go exactly how we’d planned it, but in the end—it was beautiful. It was a privilege to hold space for you that day, and it’s been an honor to walk in this motherhood journey with you. Hours may separate us, but you are never far from my heart. I am so proud of you and I love you so very much! Happy BIRTHday sweet friend. What a treasure you are. 💜 Happy 1st Birthday to the sweetest little boy, we love you JW!

It was quick. When I arrived she was riding the waves of her contractions—each one stronger than the last. She held tight, she was quiet. Beautifully she breathed with each wave, her precious baby making her way. We repeated over and over, “you’ve got this…you’re so strong!” Before long, a tiny head full of hair showed itself, and after one final, beautiful push, she made her way earth-side. A surreal moment…a precious moment. One I’ll never forget. I was honored to hold space and witness the birth of our beautiful niece…the sweetest beach baby there ever was. 🎀

Affirm foundation is established on faith. Faith is being able to put your complete trust and confidence in someone. This is the verse that gave me the idea of Affirm Foundation.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”-Matthew 7:24-25

Birth doulas use affirmations often for those they are supporting—to encourage, uplift and reassure them. As a birth doula it is my responsibility to make the sure that the mother has complete trust in me throughout their pregnancy.

To the new mamas, those who are praying to become mamas, seasoned mamas, the mamas who are grieving, grandmothers, and everywhere in between. This day is for you! To the ones who call me “mama” it’s the greatest honor I’ve ever had, and the beauty of it all is not lost on me. 🌷

Swaddling. It can be daunting. What if I don’t get their arms in there? What if they break out of it? What if they hate it? I’ve asked all of these questions with my own babies…multiple times. Research shows that babies who are swaddled for sleep tend to sleep longer stretches—because their arms aren’t able to escape (as easily or at all). Escaping arms = Moro reflex or startle reflex = baby awake. Swaddled baby + the right swaddle technique = baby sleeps (and mama sleeps). It’s important to remember to keep it tight! In addition, remember that healthy babies should not be swaddled past 3mo of age. At this point, they are developmentally capable of finding their own “comfy spot” and many babies are trying to roll or are rolling over at this point.

My sweet girl picked this for me the other day and called it a “sunflower.” She loves to pick flowers…and loves to see my face light up when she gives me the w**ds that’s she’s picked out of the front yard. So much so that often there’s a vase of w**ds on our kitchen counter.

While I see a w**d, she sees a beautiful flower. I hope that she always sees the beauty in things; the good in people. We’ve seen a lot of ugly in the last two years, but the beauty we’ve seen far outweighs the ugly.

Seeing the beauty in birth is often hard…because birth is hard. But with support and encouragement, our power shines through as beautiful. Imagine if every woman giving birth was handed a w**d but instead chose to see a “sunflower” how beautiful her birth would be.

A baby is truly life changing and having all the resources you need (and knowing what you don’t need) can help you as a new parent feel prepared and less stressed!

Yesterday, we got our first snow of the season. After spending Christmas in shorts, the snow was a welcome reminder that things can change in an instant. It went from 70+ degrees the day before to sleet, and snow overnight. Birth is like that too…things can seem slow at first, but all of a sudden you hit transition and it seems like everything goes so fast. We’ve entered a new year, and wether you’re pregnant, a new parent or a seasoned pro at wrangling children, my prayer is that wherever your transition is, birth, life, job, etc. you’ll be prepared and walk through it with confidence. Here’s to 2022! 🎉
