Where does tattoo ink actually go?

When you get a tattoo, the ink is placed into the dermis layer of the skin. While some pigment stays trapped in skin cells (which is what makes the tattoo visible), research shows that some ink particles are gradually transported through the lymphatic system.

Your lymphatic system acts as part of the body’s filtration and waste-removal network. Immune cells called macrophages can carry small pigment particles away from the skin and into nearby lymph nodes. This is one reason tattoo pigment has been found in lymph nodes during medical studies.

This doesn’t mean tattoos are unsafe—but it highlights how important healthy lymphatic circulation is for the body.
