Yerkes assembled key hereditarian psychometrists to create the army mental test. From May to July 1917, he collaborated with Henry Goddard and colleagues at Goddard’s Training School in Vineland, New Jersey. Their plan included three tests: the Army Alpha for literate recruits, the Army Beta pictorial test for illiterates or those who failed Alpha, and individual exams, often based on Binet scales, for Beta failures.
