Mental health landscape in the U.S. military
Here are some compelling statistics that underscore the importance of supervision in this context:
• In 2022, about 17.6% of active-duty service members had a documented psychological health concern and sought treatment.
• Over the period 2019–2023, more than 541,672 active component service members were diagnosed with at least one mental health disorder.
• In a large study of active duty personnel, the quarterly mean rate of mental health care visits to military treatment facilities was about 7% per quarter, and about 2% per quarter to civilian psychiatrists.
• Despite the availability of civilian mental health resources, many service members still rely predominantly on military treatment facilities.
• In 2018, roughly 25.5% of service members self-reported using mental health services in the past year, yet 34.2% reported perceived stigma around mental health care.
