Sanding & Slip Day ✨

As part of the micaceous pottery process, our GUIDE youth carefully sanded their pieces to smooth and refine the surface. After sanding, they gently wiped each piece with a damp cloth before applying slip.

Through this process, youth are learning that pottery is more than art. It is knowledge held in the Earth. Clay carries stories, teachings, and ways of learning that have been passed through generations.

Learning these practices from Martha Romero (Nambé Owingeh) connects youth to land based knowledge and intergenerational teaching. Each step in the process reminds us that our communities have always held ways of learning, creating, and sharing knowledge with the Earth.

We’re excited to see how each piece continues to take shape. 🤎✨🐢

Join us March 9–12 at TRS Basecamp for a 4-day Spring Break program filled with outdoor adventure, creativity, and cultural learning.

In collaboration with the Institute for Applied Ecology and the P’osuwäegeh Owingeh / Pojoaque Pueblo Language Department, youth will spend the week exploring the outdoors, visiting Bandelier, creating art, learning Tewa language, and building community through hands-on activities rooted in land, language, and creativity.

Through these shared experiences, our value of Maatuin (Kinship) comes to life as youth strengthen relationships with themselves, their peers, their community, and the land.

We recently had the opportunity to visit Project AWARE at Santa Fe High School, where TRS Therapists Ana S. and Lanaiya C. shared lunch with students in their Native Nest.

During the visit, we learned more about how Project AWARE’s navigators and counselors walk alongside Native youth by offering guidance, advocacy, and connection to supportive services both in school and throughout the community. Their work reflects the importance of relationship-based care and ensuring students feel seen, supported, and resourced.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect, strengthen partnerships, and continue building a circle of care for Native youth. 🤍

GUIDE x CREW Day Recap 🧗🏽‍♀️🌄

Our Winter GUIDE cohort participated in “Rock Climbing with a (Plot) Twist,” a rock climbing-based storytelling game designed to bring our winter cohort theme to life through play, adventure, and imagination. 💚

Youth climbed to collect story element cards attached to the rock wall. Once back on the ground, they opened their cards to discover characters, settings, obstacles, and tools, then worked together to build their own narratives while thinking through rising action, climax, and resolution. Every climb became part of a bigger story.

And the creativity was next level. ✨

In their stories:
• A sleep paralysis demon battled his evil twin in downtown Santa Fe.
• A tarantula who works at IHS traveled all the way to Australia on a mission to find love.
• Master Shifu from Kung Fu Panda journeyed to Diablo Canyon to be cured of a strange illness by the mysterious Sacred Corn.

Beyond the fun, youth demonstrated incredible climbing skills, courage, teamwork, and immense creativity. This is experiential learning in action, building confidence through challenge and learning that every obstacle can become part of your story.

Big props to our GUIDE cohort for their awesome climbing and to our CREW team for holding space for adventure and imagination. 🤍

✨ Community Care Day Recap ✨

Last night, our community gathered at TRS Basecamp for Winter Storytelling, rooted in culture and intergenerational connection.

We were honored to hold space with Ko’o Gloria Trujillo from Tewa Women United Saya’in Circle of Grandmothers. Youth and elders shared stories, laughter, and meaningful moments in circle. 🤍📖

Shoutout to our GUIDE Program youth and the Tewa Youth Seed Council for showing up in support of community. Your leadership helped hold the space with care and intention. 🌱

Our GUIDE youth also had the opportunity to share the stories behind their micaceous pottery pieces created alongside Ko’o Martha Romero. Watching them speak about their work, their process, and the meaning behind their pieces was a powerful reflection of cultural learning in action. 🤎

Kuu da woha to everyone who helped make the evening meaningful. Stay tuned for our next Community Care Day!🫂

As we welcome the cool weather and the lessons of winter, we’re excited to share more about our Winter GUIDE cohort. ❄️🤍

This past week, youth harvested sand in preparation for cooking traditional parched blue corn over an open fire. Alongside our Cultural Advocate, George Toya, they learned how to safely build and cook over a fire while reflecting on the teachings fire carries about clearing, renewal, and responsibility.

They also enjoyed fresh roasted corn and s’mores, sharing laughter, stories, and warmth around the flames. 🔥🌽

Through cultural connection, hands on learning, and time together outdoors, our GUIDE youth continue building knowledge, confidence, and community this winter season.

Our Winter GUIDE cohort meets Tuesday to Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 PM through March 13.

If you’re interested in joining, please reach out to henny@tewarootssociety.com or vitalia@tewarootssociety.com.
