Q: What is blepharospasm? 👁️⁠

A: Blepharospasm, also known as benign essential blepharospasm, is a condition where the eyes blink, twitch, or squeeze shut involuntarily. It happens when the part of the brain that controls the eyelid muscles stops functioning properly. While the exact cause is unknown, it can run in families and is more common in women between the ages of 40 and 60. Facial twitching may also occur.⁠
