๐ŸŒฟ Finding Hope as a Parent ๐ŸŒฟ

As a mom of a child with medical needs, Iโ€™ve learned something important: sometimes there is no โ€œreason.โ€
De novo changes happen randomly and unpredictablyโ€”thereโ€™s no pill, food, or action to blame.

If I keep asking why, I get lost in the loop of questions.
What keeps me moving forward isnโ€™t answersโ€”itโ€™s hope and empathy!

โœจ Hope that one day there will be a cure.
โœจ Hope that children born with special needs will have brighter futures.
โœจ Hope that joy and love can still live in our everyday lives.

Hope doesnโ€™t erase the challenges, but it helps me breathe, love, and believe in tomorrow. ๐ŸŒธ

Parents caring for their childrenโ€™s medical or mental health needs often dedicate all their energy to coordinating schedules around these requirements. However, it is crucial for parents to also focus on their own needs and maintain a balanced nervous system.

For parents who feel overwhelmed by negative thoughts and emotions related to managing their childโ€™s medical complications or navigating challenging life events, the EMD (Eye Movement Desensitization) and ASSYST (Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization) approaches can offer quick relief. These methods help the nervous system return to a balanced state.

Both therapy approaches can be conducted online, and I often use them as adjunct therapy options. EMD and ASSYST follow specific protocols derived from EMDR, focusing on directly addressing the source of a distressing event.

If you have a recent negative experience and canโ€™t let go of thinking about it, it consumes your day, making you feel out of place, and impacting your mood and productivity, then ASSYST AND EMD can help regulate the nervous system and deescalate the emotional and physical reactions.

EMDR targets a broader memory network connecting the dots of how past traumatic experiences take place in the โ€œhere and nowโ€

Every parent has hopes and dreams for their child, even if those dreams arenโ€™t always openly expressed. Remaining flexible with our goals and allowing fluidity of modifications when parenting a child with a disability or special needs. This doesnโ€™t mean expecting less of your child; it may mean adjusting expectations from what was envisioned

โœจ Problems related to self-esteem, confidence, isolation, and loneliness are very common in teens who seek therapy.โฃ

โœจ In therapy sessions, I offer a variety of therapeutic modalities that are best suited to the teenโ€™s particular problem. Most commonly, a combination of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). โฃ
โฃ
MBSR helps teens regulate emotions more effectively and approach problems with a calmer and more relaxed mind. Teenagers often get caught up in a negative thought cycle, and this can exacerbate the problem. Yoga and meditation can help reduce the intensity of heightened emotions and thoughts. โฃ
โฃ
Cognitive therapy helps teenagers detect automatic negative thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and behaviors that stem from a situation or event. Cognitive techniques help teens untangle those negative beliefs.โฃ
*โฃ

*โฃ
For example, the teen brings up insecurity or lack of confidence issues and says โ€œWhen I walk alone in the hallway, people don't want to talk to me, and no one likes meโ€. A cognitive approach to therapy helps the teen interpret a disturbance differently so they no longer feel lonely, inadequate, and insecure. The teen after some exploration comes up with a thought โ€œeveryone walks alone in the hallway, my friends are just getting out of the classroom, and I can see whoโ€™s available and come up to a person firstโ€

Before opening my private practice in January 2021, I helped adults and children with medical complications as a hospital social worker. My most memorable time was working with children on dialysis. What struck me the most was the incredible resilience of those kiddos with unique medical needs. Iโ€™ve learned so much from this experience; it helped me better myself in my journey with my son. I helped children and families overcome mental health and financial hurdles that prevented them from enjoying things that matter to them.โฃ
โฃ
As a social worker at the Senior Agency, I helped older adults remain safe and independent in their homes. My most memorable moments were meeting some older folks and hearing their incredible life stories. I was mesmerized by their talents, life experiences, and the wisdom theyโ€™ve gained in their life journey. โฃ
โฃ
Having my private practice provided me with the most incredible opportunities. From my two years of internship as a school counselor and addiction counselor to my post-graduate professional experience, I have built a foundation to help my clients in private practice and provide them with the safe and non-judgmental space they need and break barriers that prevent them from thriving and moving toward more meaningful and fulfilling life they want to build for themselves.

High expectations often lead to a positive transition. I think bringing up an example from a personal situation can be helpful. During an IEP (Individualized Education Program) meeting, I felt my son could have gained more from setting the bar higher for his educational needs. While I agreed with many things the teachers had suggested, I explored what was possible for my son. โฃ
