Freshly pumped breastmilk can be stored in the refrigerator up to 4 days, and in the freezer for up to 12 months. See storage guidelines for maintaining the safety and quality of breast milk. https://bit.ly/2YbS6Ys

I have a problem with lactation cookies being available all over the place as if people who have issues with low milk supply are simply cookie- deficient.

So why show cookies? Well, I got tired of saying that the recommendation for newborn feeding is 8-12 feedings every 24 hours, not every 2-3 hours. I get it- 8 and 12 into 24 make every 2-3 hours sound reasonable, but babies don't know how to tell time. We are often teaching that we need to watch for feeding cues as long as we are feeding every 2-3 hours, which is confusing. Plus, we know that sleeping babies often stay asleep if you try to wake them to eat.

So- cookies. I like Oreos because you can stack them. You stack 8 (or 12 or more -whatever goal we want to set) and every time you feed the baby, you eat a cookie and when the pile is gone, you win. We get a new stack every day.

Picture is a stack of 8 Oreos, taken real time by a mama who is rocking this!

Food poisoning occurs after eating food contaminated by bacteria. The symptoms of food poisoning are basically the same as those of stomach flu: abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.

So many moms tell us they were advised to “pump and dump”——check this out!!!!

IABLE has a new clinical tool!

Trash the Pump and Dump (TPD) is a free clinical reference that highlights the most concerning substances, medications, and infectious illnesses for lactation.

The goal is that if it is not in this list, don't worry, it's fine. So, rather than searching to find out if an exposure is safe during lactation, just check the TPD to see if it is on the list!

It's one more strategy to stop the advice of pumping and dumping when unnecessary!

TPD can be viewed as either a website or a mobile app. Check out the website here: https://trashthepumpanddump.org/
(and see the HELP page for mobile app installation)
