Small children aren’t the only ones at risk of swallowing magnets. Many teens and tweens have accidentally swallowed them too.

One common scenario is when they try to create a fake tongue piercing using two magnetic balls and accidentally swallow them.

It happens so easily. But the magnets can attract to each other inside the body, sticking together and tearing holes in your child’s gut. This can cause life-changing injuries.

⚠️Please talk to older children about the dangers of putting magnets in or near their mouths.

⚠️ PARENT SAFETY ALERT – PLEASE READ & SHARE ⚠️
A recent story reported by WGN‑TV highlights a dangerous TikTok trend involving a popular toy called NeeDoh. Children are microwaving the toy after seeing it online and it has resulted in severe burns, including a 9-year-old who was seriously injured.
🚫 Important safety reminders:
• Toys should NEVER be microwaved, heated, frozen, or altered unless the manufacturer explicitly states it is safe
• Social media trends are not safety tested
• Heated toys can explode, rupture, or cause serious burns to skin and face
• Children often don’t understand how quickly heat can cause injury
👨‍👩‍👧 What parents & caregivers can do right now:
• Talk to kids about not trying online challenges or “hacks”
• Monitor TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels
• Remove toys that could be misused or altered
• Encourage kids to ask an adult before trying something they see online
🔥 Burn injuries happen fast and can be life-altering. Please take a moment to talk with your children and share this message so others can do the same.

A local mother is raising awareness after her son was severely burned because of a TikTok trend.

Is there a relationship between screen time and academic performance in grade school?

A recent study of children in 3rd and 6th grade found that greater screen time — watching TV, playing on the computer, video games, and using handheld devices — was linked to lower odds of achieving high reading and math scores on standardized tests for third graders and lower odds of high math scores for sixth graders. Lower performance on standardized reading exams was associated with higher video game use particularly for third graders.

For every additional hour of screen time, students showed a 9% to 10% lower odds of achieving a higher reading or math score across both grade levels.

Good reminder if anyone in your family has spring allergies. It might be tempting to open those windows but that allows the outdoor allergens in and makes things worse!

Spring is here and unfortunately so are pollen allergies. Pollen from trees, grasses and weeds is one of the most common allergens and can cause sneezing and itching. Keeping your windows closed during the spring season when pollen counts are high can help alleviate or prevent allergy symptoms. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4v3UGOH
