Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. Each one of these illuminated bags has up to 8 names on it representing individuals who lost their life to a drug overdose. Please let this sink in, this is supposed to evoke an emotional response. These bags not only represent the individuals that were lost but each of the families and friends that had to bury a loved one from a preventable death. Today is a day of remembrance and also a day for action. Go out and learn about overdose prevention. Arm yourself with the knowledge and tools to help fight this epidemic. Overdose can and must be prevented. Overdose prevention solutions exist – let’s use them. Learn about overdose signs and symptoms. Carry Narcan (opioid overdose reversing medication). Learn about policy and legislation in your local community. Everyone has a right to respectful and comprehensive health care. Let’s end the stigma surrounding substance use disorders and seeking life saving treatment. It starts with you.
