At Educational Advocacy & Consulting, we understand the challenges that come with trying to secure the right school services for your child. From identification to implementation, there’s a lot to navigate — and the process can be overwhelming for parents who don’t understand the ins and outs of the school system. As an expert group of Advocates and Educational Consultants serving the Chicago and Washington DC areas, we’ll assist your family through the entire process of procuring services for your child. If your child is currently receiving services, we can also work with you to make sure that he or she is getting the appropriate services for their needs. This can be in the form of:

Receiving accommodations under section 504, designed for students who have a “physical or mental impairment” that “substantially limits one or more major life activities”

Obtaining a complete evaluation to determine if your child has a disability in need of Special Education supports and services through an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan)

When you work with EAC, we’ll conduct observations, complete a thorough review of your child’s records, refer your family to outside providers if needed, and collaborate in a cooperative manner with your child’s school team. If you are struggling to come to an agreement with your school district regarding services, we can intervene through Early Resolution, Mediation, and Formal State Complaints. In addition to our advocacy services, we’re very excited to announce that we’ll soon be opening our Dyslexia Center! Here, we’ll offer high-quality reading and writing instruction to help children successfully meet the literary standards in school and for the future. Creating the most appropriate opportunities for your child is our mission and we’re here to help with whatever you need to make that happen. Visit our website for more information or call (773-230-8320) or email us today to set up a free 30-minute consultation. We look forward to getting to know you and your child!

When we ask kids, “How was school?” the answer is often one word: fine.

Most of the time, it’s not that they don’t want to share. It’s that the question is so broad that they’re not sure where to start. If nothing particularly exciting or unusual happened that day, they may not know what to say.

Sometimes asking a more specific question can help open the door to a more thoughtful conversation. Small prompts about their day can make it easier for kids to remember moments, share experiences, and talk about how they’re feeling.

Here are a few conversation starters that may help get more than “fine.”

One of the most common things we hear from parents is:

“I’m not sure if this is the right time to ask for help.”

The special education process can feel overwhelming, and many families aren’t sure what questions to ask or what their options are.

That’s exactly why educational advocates exist.

Our goal is to help families understand the process, feel confident in meetings, and make informed decisions about their child’s education.

If you’ve been wondering whether it might be helpful to talk to someone, our free 30-minute consultation is a good place to start.

March brings so many joyful reading celebrations into classrooms.

But if reading feels hard for your child, this month can carry a quiet weight at home.

You might see the frustration. The avoidance. A child who is bright and curious in every other way, but shuts down when it’s time to read.

Struggling with reading isn’t about intelligence. For many students with dyslexia, it’s about how their brain processes written language.

The encouraging part? With structured, evidence-based support, growth is possible and confidence can be rebuilt. We celebrate literacy, and every reader’s journey toward it.

It can be hard to tell whether a dyslexia program is truly working.

A child may be receiving support. They may have accommodations in place. You may be hearing that services are being provided consistently.

But effective intervention should lead to measurable progress.

Parents deserve to see clear data, structured and multisensory instruction, and a plan that directly targets their child’s specific reading needs.

If progress feels unclear or stalled, it is okay to ask questions and request more information.

We are here to help families understand what effective dyslexia intervention should look like.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

About 1 in 6 children in the United States has a developmental disability. For many families, that means navigating evaluations, school meetings, learning differences, and systems that can feel overwhelming.

Awareness matters. But so does action.

Meaningful inclusion requires appropriate evaluations, individualized supports, and collaboration between schools and families.

This month, we recognize the strengths of these students and the importance of building educational environments where they are truly supported.
