🌪️ Jamaica Needs Us Now: Support Hurricane Melissa Relief

Hurricane Melissa, a catastrophic Category 5 storm, has left Jamaica devastated—at least 32 lives lost and thousands displaced, with damages estimated at over $4 billion. Communities are struggling with destroyed homes, flooded towns, and urgent shortages of food, water, and shelter.

The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) has launched a $1 Million Matching Fund to double the impact of every donation. That means every dollar you give is matched, dollar-for-dollar, directly fueling relief efforts on the ground.

AFJ teams are already working with local partners to deliver emergency supplies, clean water, hygiene kits, and shelter support to families hardest hit. But the scale of destruction means they need our help more than ever.

Every 3 minutes and 30 seconds in the United States, a limb is amputated due to diabetes.

Amputations are on the rise in the United States—154,000 people with diabetes undergo amputation each year. And as high as 80% of non-traumatic lower limb amputations happen due to diabetes complications. An individual who has had an amputation has a worse chance of five-year survival than someone with coronary artery disease, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer.

Congratulations to recent Barron Collier High School graduate and STEM student star William Miller of Naples, Florida.

William will attend Yale this fall as part of the Class of 2026, and was awarded a summer internship with The Vascular Group of Naples underwritten by a grant from the Yale Club of Southwest Florida through the Rajasinghe Vascular Research and Education Foundation (RAVAREF).

William is auditing and analyzing 20 years of surgical outcomes from an index operation that has been meticulously refined over three generations of vascular surgeons – carotid endarterectomy.

He hopes to share and present the results in a peer reviewed forum soon.

William’s parents are first generation immigrants from Uruguay and Brazil.

RAVAREF supports the STARS Program at Yale and provides scholarships at Duke University School of Medicine.

Anesthesiologist Lisa Wollman alleged that at least five orthopedic surgeons regularly kept patients under anesthesia longer than medically necessary because the doctors were juggling two operations at once.
