• Light resistance opening (5 sec)
• Side-to-side activation (right & left)

One of the most fascinating things I learned during my recent cranial nerves course is just how interconnected the body truly is.

We often think of the cranial nerves as being limited to the skull, but several of their nuclei extend into the brainstem and upper cervical spine. This means that the mobility and alignment of the neck can influence important functions like balance, swallowing, facial movement, and even autonomic regulation.

Another reminder that the body doesn’t work in isolated parts — everything is connected.

One of the biggest mistakes I see with TMJ pain is focusing only on the jaw.

Your jaw doesn’t work in isolation — it’s closely connected to the neck and upper shoulder muscles.

Two of the most common trigger points I see in people with jaw pain are:

• Upper Trapezius – can refer pain up the side of the neck and around the ear
• Suboccipital Muscles – small muscles at the base of the skull that can refer pain behind the eyes and across the head (often felt like a “headband” tension headache)

When these areas are tight or overloaded, they can contribute to jaw tension, headaches, and TMJ symptoms.

Sometimes the key to improving jaw pain is treating the surrounding system — not just the jaw itself.

Your surgery healed… but did your fascia?
