Filling Homes

Filling Homes We are an expression of the Church and recognized as a social ministry.
(1)

Filling Homes is a faith-based social ministry providing residential, day, and community services that empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live with dignity, independence, and inclusion across Northwest Ohio. Filling Homes' identity is centered on the basis that Jesus Christ has exhorted us to love and care for others - especially those who are incapable of caring for themselves. We are a corporation whose goal is not to return a profit for shareholders but to increase our value to those we serve - consistently reinvesting surplus income to improve service quality. We must be effective advocates to insure those we serve are able to live full healthy lives in a comfortable, homelike environment in the most independent means possible. We recognize that individuals with developmental disabilities have the right to make choices and decisions, which affect their lives as well as the right to participate as full members of the community. As a result, we seek to encourage, value and support implementing these choices by providing residential and support services designed to promote community awareness and acceptance of all its members.

Buddy Bumper Bowling is all about bringing people together, and thanks to Napoleon Area City Schools for lending a school bus for the day and to driver Randy Barnes, Filling Homes residents who use wheelchairs were able to travel to River City Bowl-A-Way and be part of the day.

We’re grateful for Napoleon Schools’ “All In” commitment to inclusion and community involvement, going beyond the classroom to create opportunities for individuals of all abilities, as well as Randy’s many years of dedicated work supporting members of the Henry County community. We couldn’t do this work without our friends.

Buddy Bumper Bowling brought together more than 100 individuals and 30+ student volunteers from Tinora High School’s Ram Radicals for a day full of connection and fun at River City Bowl-A-Way!

Bowlers joined us from Filling Homes’ Main Campus, Soaring Arts Studio, Trinity Place, and Filling Homes Community Center, along with friends from Active Day of Defiance, COREe TLC Activity Center and COREe World of Work, and we are Limitless.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made the day possible. Thank you to our high school volunteers and bowlers for their great attitudes and sportsmanship, Filling Homes' Sarah Jackson for organizing such a meaningful outing, Randy Schwaiger and the Bowl-A-Way team for their hospitality, Napoleon Area City Schools and Randy Barnes for bowlers’ transportation, Thrivent Action Team for sponsoring lunch, Tano's Pizza for preparing 40 pizzas before 11 a.m., and our maintenance team, therapy staff, and DSPs for supporting individuals throughout the day.

We’re already looking forward to next year… a decade of Buddy Bumper Bowling!

During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Adrian had the opportunity to attend a bowling event made possible by students from the Four County Career Center ’s Business Professionals of America program, who hosted a fun and inclusive tournament for classrooms across the area.

Adrian’s team chose to put him first by rescheduling a routine appointment so he wouldn’t miss the experience, and that decision made all the difference.

With support from the event volunteers, Napoleon Area City Schools, and our staff, Adrian was able to feel comfortable, included, and simply enjoy the moment. The photo says it all.

It’s a reminder that when we lead with our hearts, opportunities like this can have a lasting impact.

For more than 46 years, Abba Chen called our Main Campus home and became a deeply loved and unforgettable part of the Filling Homes family.

All staff, past and present, friends, and supporters are invited to join us this Monday, March 23 at 10:30 a.m. in the Filling Homes Chapel as we celebrate his life, share memories, and give thanks for the joy he brought to our community. 💙

Please note, Abba passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025. Originally postponed due to weather and travel, we are grateful to now gather together to honor and remember Abba.

On March 4, Tara and Esty attended Developmental Disabilities Awareness & Advocacy Day 2026 at the Ohio Statehouse after being invited by the Fulton County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

They spent the day connecting with others, sharing their perspectives, and hearing from Governor Mike DeWine. They also met with Representative Jim Hoops and Senator Rob McColley to talk about what matters in their community.

Tara shared, “It was a good reminder that we can speak up for each other and ourselves, and that we do have rights.”

During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and always, we’re so proud of Tara and Esty for representing their community and using their voices.🧡

“May God grant you always a sunbeam to warm you, a moonbeam to charm you, and a sheltering angel so nothing can harm you.”

Wishing you a peaceful and blessed St. Patrick’s Day. 🌈

For nearly 70 years, Hope Lutheran Church in Hamler has been an incredible part of the heart and story of Filling Homes.

As one of the original congregations in our Association of Congregations, their faithful support has helped sustain and grow this mission from the very beginning, and continues to make a meaningful difference today.

We were so honored to be welcomed this past Sunday to share a Mission Moment. Thank you to Pastor Diehl and the entire congregation for your kindness, encouragement, and for supporting Filling Homes through the day’s door offering!
