Black History Spotlight:
In 1961, H.P. and Amelia Williams and Clarence and Margurite Southall were visionaries who looked beyond their individual businesses and focused on what their community truly needed. Both families already operated established funeral homes that served families with dignity, care, and professionalism. Rather than competing, they recognized that combining their strengths would allow them to better serve the people who depended on them.
As licensed funeral directors and embalmers, H.P. Williams and Clarence Southall understood that their work went far beyond funerals. It was about care, trust, faith, and responsibility. At a time when Black families had limited options and faced systemic barriers, their decision to unite reflected foresight, courage, and a deep commitment to community service.
Amelia Williams and Margurite Southall played an instrumental part in the success of the business. Both women were licensed funeral directors and were actively involved in daily operations, decision-making, and family care. At a time when Black women were rarely given public recognition for their leadership or professional roles, their knowledge, discipline, and steady leadership helped guide the funeral home. Grounded in faith, they ensured families were served with compassion, understanding, and dignity.
Together, the founders established a culture rooted in inclusivity and deep respect for colleagues within the funeral service profession. They valued cooperation, mutual support, and professionalism, understanding that strong relationships within the industry ultimately strengthened service to families and the broader community.
That same year, the two families officially formed Williams & Southall Funeral Home, Inc. Their vision extended beyond funeral services alone. The business also provided ambulance services and medical transportation, filling an essential gap during a period when Black residents often lacked timely access to emergency and non-emergency medical care. This work reflected their belief that true service meant meeting people’s needs in every season of life.
Today, Williams & Southall Funeral Home, Inc. continues to serve families in Lafourche, Ascension, Assumption, St. James, and surrounding areas, remaining a trusted presence rooted in faith, service, and consistency.
That vision continues through generations. The Southall family has carried the business forward for four generations, honoring the founders’ commitment to faith, community, service, and inclusivity.
More than sixty years later, Williams & Southall Funeral Home, Inc. stands as a living example of visionary leadership and Black family legacy, built on unity, faith, and a deep dedication to serving both families and the funeral service profession.
