Sapa, Vietnam with beauty and heartbreak is home to the tallest mountain in Indochina, Mount Fansipan, and is nestled near the border of China. It is a land of breathtaking beauty with layered rice terraces cascading down the mountains, ancient temples tucked high in the clouds, and vibrant cultures of native tribes who have lived here for generations.
But behind the postcard perfect scenery high up i the clouds lies another reality which reveals poverty, lack of healthcare, and the dark shadow of human trafficking. One of the most unforgettable images burned into my memory is seeing a child, no more than four years old, carrying a baby on their back while begging in the streets. Locals warned us not to give money, saying it encourages some parents to keep their children out begging. But how do you turn away when a hungry child looks into your eyes?
Why does this happen? Why are children put in this position? These kids need more than pity-they need protection. They need a future where they can play, learn, and grow without fear or exploitation.
We cannot change everything at once, but we can raise awareness. We can support organizations working to protect these children. We can speak up. The beauty of Sapa deserves to be matched by the safety and dignity of its children.
