A few days ago, I posted a very over-the-top April Fools âboot camp inferno yogaâ class⌠and a surprising number of people thought it was real.
Even with things like âno savasanaâ, "no rest, no props" and "extreme edm playlist", several folks didn't realize I was joking until "cold plunge in the parking lot".
It made me pause. Because it speaks to how prevalent that westernized, performative, âno pain, no gainâ version of "yoga" (heavy quotations đ) has become.
And just to be clear - if what youâre looking for is a great stretch, a good sweat, or a movement-based fitness classâŚthere is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But there is a difference between an exercise class and a yoga practice, one that has become very muddled.
Today, I had one student.
In 75 minutes, only about 45 of those were posture practice (including savasana). The rest was conversation and philosophy teachings, where we discussed concepts like samskaras and being the observer, tied into our asana practice with some of Panditji's commentary on yoga sutra 2:47.
This is the yoga I teach. Rooted in source wisdom. Slower. More spacious. Less about performance, and more about relationship - with your body, your breath, your inner landscape.
Most of our classes have 3-6 students in our small group space, but given the choice.....I would rather hold space for one sincere student than dilute my teachings to cater to a packed room of âsweat and stretchâ folks caught in the very real, very common Western illusion that yoga is just another fitness class.
And if that deeper, quieter practice is something youâve been craving, or even are just curious about - you are so welcome here đ¤
