Why CO₂ laser resurfacing is ideally performed in the winter

CO₂ laser treatments work by creating controlled thermal injury to the skin, triggering collagen remodeling and the regeneration of new, healthier tissue. During this healing phase, the skin is extremely vulnerable to UV exposure. Even small amounts of sunlight can increase the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, redness that lasts longer, or delayed healing.

Winter naturally provides the safest conditions for recovery:

• Significantly reduced UV index
Shorter days and weaker sunlight minimize the chance of UV-induced complications while the skin is repairing itself.

• Easier sun avoidance
Patients are already indoors more often and wearing heavier clothing, making adherence to post-treatment protocols (like avoiding direct sunlight) far more achievable.

• Lower risk of pigmentation issues
Because the skin is in an inflammatory state after CO₂ resurfacing, melanocytes are more reactive. Completing the treatment during low-UV months dramatically reduces the risk of dark spots or uneven pigmentation forming during recovery.

• Ideal timing for collagen regeneration

How to know when it’s time to start CO₂ laser resurfacing
