🧪 The Hidden Risks of Long-Term Antihistamine Use

Antihistamines can be great for short-term relief — but using them every day for years may carry downsides, especially the older, first-generation ones like diphenhydramine (Benadryl).

📌 What the research shows:
• First-generation antihistamines interfere with normal brain and body signals and may cause drowsiness, mental fog, dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, or trouble urinating, particularly in older adults.
• Long-term, cumulative use of those has been linked to higher risks of cognitive decline and dementia in older people.
• These older drugs also affect sleep quality and natural sleep architecture when used chronically.

💡 Key point:
Using antihistamines occasionally for flare-ups is very different from daily, long-term use, which has been linked in research to increased risk of cognitive effects — especially in older adults.
