Bad therapy experiences are one of the main reasons LGBTQIA+ adults stop going altogether, and that makes sense.

Sitting across from someone who questions your identity instead of helping you work through what you actually came in for is exhausting and, frankly, harmful.

Affirming care skips that part. You don't walk in having to justify who you are.

Our counselors in Nashville are trained specifically to provide that, so the work can start on day one.

Have you found that feeling safe with a therapist made a difference in how much progress you were able to make?

Immigrant women need culturally competent therapy. Carrying everything: marriage, kids, family obligations, and your own sense of self - is exhausting.

And for many Muslim and Arab-American women, asking for help has meant finding a therapist who doesn't really understand their world.

That gap is real, and it keeps a lot of women from getting support they actually need.

If something has felt off and you've been putting off reaching out, this might be the moment to change that.

If you're a nurse, teacher, EMT, or work in any kind of caregiving role, you already know the value of mental health care. Actually using it is a different thing.

This Counseling Awareness Month, consider whether you've been applying the same standard to yourself that you'd apply to anyone else in your position.

Remember, the people who spend their days supporting others are often the last ones to ask for support themselves.

Why is it so hard to make that first therapy appointment?

Most of us have gotten really good at convincing ourselves that things are "fine enough." Maybe not great, but definitely manageable. And manageable can feel like enough...for a while.

We keep waiting for some clearer sign, some moment where it becomes obvious that we've crossed a line and now we're allowed to ask for help. That moment may or may not come though.

What does come, reliably, is another year of pushing through, of telling yourself you'll deal with it later, of putting everyone else's needs ahead of your own just to keep things running.

Most people who finally make the appointment say they wished they had done it sooner. Why? Because life didn't need to be this hard! We hear that a lot.

Moving to a new city is sold as an adventure, and sometimes it is.

But there's a stretch in the middle, after the novelty wears off and before you've really planted roots, where it can feel pretty isolating.

If you're in that stretch right now, you're not doing it wrong. It just takes longer than people admit.

📢 This Counseling Awareness Month, if you're new to Nashville and running on empty, talking to someone is a reasonable next step.

Our Story

The Cedar Tree story is a story of strength, resilience, and survival in the face of challenge. Much like mental health, actually.

When we bought our house a few years ago, much of the back yard was overgrown with dense brush and vines, so thick and thorny that we couldn’t see through it. We decided to plant a small garden there, and after the winter started clearing the brush. The work was tough, but after a few days we discovered a scrawny little cedar tree, barely alive. It looked almost as bad as Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree. But we carefully cleared around it, gave it a little fertilizer. It started growing. Its color became brighter, its trunk stronger, and the branches spread. With access to light, water, and nourishment, it thrived. In a few months, it looked like a different tree, and now, a few years later, it’s 30 feet tall, symmetrical, lush, and beautiful. People are like that too. Someone fighting stress, anxiety, depression, or other life and mental health challenges may need help. Once the challenges are cleared, we not only survive, we thrive!
