Have you ever wondered if you drink too much? How would you know if you do or don't? Drinking problems aren't always as obvious as you'd think and it's actually not too difficult to qualify for an alcohol or substance use disorder. Read my first blog post to learn how this is determined, how problem drinking can differ from addiction, and what can be done about it

Excited to share I’m expanding my practice Recovery Plus Consulting to include telehealth substance abuse counseling across Tennessee! I plan to keep a small caseload to allow for more intensive work with clients as needed and continue my other endeavors. I really enjoy working with people that’ve struggled with repeated or chronic relapse and those seeking additional support after treatment, so if you know anyone I’d love to talk to them! My website has more info 🤓

My first TAADAC Conference presentation went over SO well! I had so much fun sharing positive psychology with everyone and meeting so many new people. So appreciative for all the support and encouragement I got along the way too. Feeling excited, challenged, and loved this week 🥰

Check out my website for Recovery Plus Consulting! Would love to share a different approach to addiction treatment with you too

The holidays are a great time to check your boundaries 😅

One of my favorite analogies for boundaries (besides the constant fence-mending in Yellowstone season 1, boundaries need maintenance too!) are redwood trees. I got to visit once and learned these huge trees have some of the most shallow roots because of the rocky earth in the PNW. They stay upright and strong through connecting their roots together. Too far from the others and they fall. Too close and they’re smothered. Interdependence is a good word for this. It means the balance of self and others, it lies between codependence and independence. Where do you lie with those you love? Happy holidays!

Addiction and recovery are far more complex than using and not using.

I think most would agree cancer is a pretty complex disease, hear me out. Some are more susceptible than others, there’s a lot of possible environmental and biological factors at play, it affects some more than others, it changes the body, and it comes with a range of other symptoms. Tumors may be a well known symptom but many of the other symptoms need to be treated too and, though it can be treated and managed, the individual may always be prone to relapse. This experience not only challenges the impacted individual but also their loved ones. These are very different experiences but addiction is also a complex disease with a range of susceptibility, contributing factors, and symptoms - using substances is just one. Understanding the complexity of this disease is crucial for those directly and indirectly impacted by it and for helping reduce the shameful stigmas attached to it. Here’s a basic overview.

*Didn’t cite everything this time because I’ve gathered this from a variety sources over the years but I did include some easy resources at the end!

Thought I’d share my quote of the week I put up at work 😊

Many of the folks in addiction treatment I’ve been working with have been asking, ‘Am I supposed to just keep fighting this thing forever?’. Exhausting thought. I think for anyone seeking big change it’s easy to get caught up in the fight you’re facing. This needs to be addressed but it’s also important to take time and consider what victory could look like then maybe pursue that instead. What dreams could you make realities? What passions could you pursue? What kind of person could you become? Recovery, change, and its losses are not easy, but remember to take time to look at what you’re building. If it’s sturdy enough you may not have to fight so much after long.
