Today, we are proud to announce HCA Healthcare collected 19,846 pounds of unused or expired medications during our seventh annual “Crush the Crisis” national prescription drug take back day. In total, we have now collected more than 108,500 pounds of medication since launching “Crush the Crisis” as an enterprise initiative in 2019.

“I am incredibly proud of our organization in this milestone year,” said Dr. Randy Fagin, senior vice president and chief quality officer at HCA Healthcare. “At our core, we are people taking care of people, and our annual Crush the Crisis take back day is a powerful reflection of that commitment. I am grateful to all of our colleagues and local law enforcement partners for helping us to create healthier tomorrows for our communities.”

HCA Healthcare facilities across all 15 of our U.S. divisions partnered with local law enforcement to help community members safely and anonymously dispose of unused or expired medication. The events were held in alignment with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which collected 571,054 pounds of medication.

💜We’re proud to announce that the HCA Healthcare Foundation, through its Healthier Tomorrow Fund, will strengthen its collaboration with March of Dimes through a new $1.5 million grant to support their Low Dose, Big Benefits™ campaign.

Preeclampsia and hypertensive disorders affect 1 in 8 pregnancies. Low-dose aspirin is currently recommended for individuals at high or moderate risk for preeclampsia during pregnancy. Despite the benefits, low dose aspirin is still underutilized. With focus areas in Houston, Texas and Miami, Florida, Low Dose, Big Benefits aims to prevent preeclampsia risk in pregnancies through comprehensive provider education, patient and community awareness, and a quality improvement plan in Federally Qualified Health Centers to better identify health risks and support the appropriate use of low dose aspirin.

When Jenifer Hughes, a cardiac care nurse at HCA Healthcare’s Chippenham Hospital, began her fight against Stage 2 breast cancer, she never imagined she’d meet someone walking the same path – let alone just weeks later. At her first chemotherapy appointment at nearby HCA Healthcare affiliate Johnston-Willis Hospital, she met Alyssa Taylor, an oncology nurse and fellow Powhatan, Virginia resident. Two months later, Alyssa was also diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer.

What started as a chance meeting became a bond built on resilience, laughter and unwavering support. From sharing rides and meals to ringing the bell at the end of treatment, Jenifer and Alyssa turned a difficult journey into a story of strength and friendship. They also joined a breast cancer support group at The Hawthorne Cancer Center, part of the Sarah Cannon Cancer Network at Johnston-Willis Hospital and often met for food and laughter before sessions. Today, both are cancer-free – and their friendship is stronger than ever.

💗Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally and the second most common in the U.S. The average risk of a woman developing breast cancer in her lifetime is about 13% or 1 in 8. But there’s hope: the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is over 99%.

🩺 Early detection saves lives. Across the HCA Healthcare network, our caregivers perform approximately 1.5 million mammograms each year – a vital tool in catching breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable.
