Winter descended upon the ground on the chilly morning of Dec. 13 with the first light of day casting gentle shadows across the meticulously manicured rows of marble headstones. The air – brisk and fresh – was filled with the invigorating scent of pine from the thousands of beautiful wreaths waiting to be placed at each headstone. The fog, lingering like a delicate veil, slowly lifted under the sun's warming rays, revealing the tranquil beauty of the Chattanooga National Cemetery as crowds waited for the Wreaths Across America ceremony to begin.

A routine lung cancer screening at VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) led to a significant discovery for the 58-year-old Army Veteran Jeffrey Duke, a unique nodule that led to a lung cancer diagnosis.

However, its early detection proved lifesaving as the Veteran left TVHS cancer-free, without the need for radiation.

TVHS is here for you should you be told you have a lung nodule through smoking cessation services, nutrition services, psychological support, social work services, and chaplain support. In addition, VA research study, MAS-EXPAND, is screening Veterans for lung cancer with CT who do not meet the traditional eligibility criteria, including Veterans with military environmental exposures.

It’s finally here! Help us wish a HAPPY 138TH BIRHTDAY to our namesake Sgt. Alvin C. York. The birthday memorial will be inside Bldg. 107 at the Alvin C. York VA campus TOMORROW from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and will be livestreamed.

Born Dec. 13, 1887 in Pall Maul, Tennessee, Alvin York was drafted into World War I as an infantry private in the Army serving from 1917 – 1919. York earned the Medal of Honor and the French Croix de Guerre for his heroic actions on Oct. 18, 1918, where he helped capture 132 Germans in the midst of a firefight. After the war, he dedicated his life to the betterment of his rural community establishing roadways and the first high school. In 1985, the Murfreesboro Veterans’ Administration Hospital was renamed to Alvin C. York Veterans’ Administration Medical Center in honor of York’s gallant actions.

VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System’s Community Living Center recently received zero clinical findings – a rare accomplishment – following a quality survey from Ascellon Corporation.

Over four days, Ascellon analyzed and reviewed procedures and processes, including medication management; prevention and treatment of unplanned weight loss; resident dining services (assistive devices); care and treatment of pressure injuries and wounds; and more.

“A survey with zero findings is amazing. There are always one or two deficiencies in the environment or something. But this time, literally zero. I mean, this has to be a record,” said Dr. Ishrat Ansari.
