This hip shift and squeeze drill is fantastic for golfers with low back pain, radiating nerve pain, and sciatica like pain.

As we lift the hips off the floor and squeeze the ball, we are creating an internal rotation movement at the hips on the pelvis, opening up the space in the back of the pelvis including putting the glute max and smaller muscles on a bit of a stretch. Breathing and hanging out in this position is fantastic to relieve nerve pain and restore some blood flow to these irritated structures.

The ability to separate the pelvis from the trunk in rotation AND flexion and extension is critical for golf.

The best golfers in the world use this separation to create efficient speed and to set the club path.

For golfers that are working hard trying to manipulate and fix the swing before impact or cannot seem to increase swing speed and power without creating impact inconsistencies, working to use this mechanism can be the key.

To do this, we first need to master the physical requirements behind it. Hip mobility, pelvis mobility, trunk mobility and strength through these regions.

This is a great drill for building and improving expansion in the upper back that allows the shoulder and shoulder blade to get into golf specific positions without compensation.

This drill helps teach us to allow the shoulder blade to protract and move on the rib cage to encourage the ability to get shoulder and trunk separation (critical for the kinematic sequence) while building strength through this movement.

This week, we break down a case study from a Golf Club of TN golfer who had recurring knee pain and a new miss... the pull hook.

Take a look at how we combine data from a physical evaluation and orthopedic exam with a swing analysis to see where the two problems are related. From here, we create a world class treatment plan that address everything the golfer needs from the ground up to alleviate pain and injury, improving and restoring golf mechanics, and keeping it that way.

The takeaway is simple but powerful: the golf swing is an expression of what the body can physically achieve. When key mobility and stability requirements are missing, the swing will always find a workaround—often at the expense of both performance and long-term joint health. A comprehensive, full...

This is a great drill for people who have restored and worked on shoulder mobility. At this point, we are trying to drive control and stability at the shoulder to improve our ability to create separation from the shoulder and the trunk, a subtle but critical bit of sequence in the golf swing.

This drill helps put you into the position to maximize shoulder separation and learn to control it.

When it comes time to address the kinematic sequence in the golf swing, this drill can be a great help!

We know we want to initiate the downswing with the pelvis, then the trunk, lead arm, and finally the club head.

After the mobility at these regions are addressed, we still need to work to make sure the sequencing and patterning/ control is making its way to the swing.

Focusing on not just shifting the weight but turning at the pelvis before the kbell changes direction is the goal. This helps drive the sensation and feel of separating pelvis from trunk, even when the upper half is still moving in the backswing!

This is a great drill for driving space and control at the hip capsule. Here we are holding the hinged position with the heel raised and knee bent while the other hip goes into extension. The muscles around the hip work hard to stabilize before working into controlled turns, taking the awareness around the fatigued muscles to help teach us exactly which muscles should be working to control the pelvis through rotation.

Try 30s hold, 3 turns, and another 30s hold!

Can you separate the pelvis from the trunk in the golf swing?

Did you know that mastering this ability requires mobility at the hip and trunk as well as stability at the trunk and lower extremity?

Learning to master this ability will not only improve your golf game and potential, it will drastically improve your ability to age well while minimizing aches and pains, further mobility loss, and independence.

This week we included a previous article from Nov 10th on the body-swing connection, a critically important concept at Integrated Rehab and Performance Center.

You need to understand that the swing can create pain, and pain and restriction can create a sub-optimal swing! Make sure you are working with a professional who is going to connect the dots and work to improve both...
